Yuwa-India
Yuwa uses girls’ team sports as a platform for social development in rural India. Yuwa is one of the largest girls’ football programs in India, with 250 players, 150 of whom practice daily. In 2009 Franz Gastler founded Yuwa with the financial help of his high school friends, Greg Deming, Stephen Peterson, and Erik Odland, to use football as a platform to combat child marriage, illiteracy and human trafficking among girls in rural India. Franz Gastler
Franz Gastler (born in 1982 in Edina, Minnesota) is an American social activist, teacher and football coach who works primarily in India. He is the co-founder and executive director of non-government organisation (NGO) Yuwa-India. Early life and education Gastler studied at Edina High School and graduated in 2000. He attended University Professors Program of Boston University, and received his Bachelor of Arts and Master of Arts in international political economy. He is certified in negotiation and mediation from the "university consortium" Program on Negotiation at the Harvard Law School. He underwent internship at the Ministry of Finance and Public Credit in Bogota, Colombia. He participated in various sports. He received training in judo at the United States Olympic Training Center. Child marriage in India, according to the Indian law, is a marriage where either the woman or man is below the age of 21. Most child marriages involve girls, many of whom are in poor socio-economic conditions. Child marriages are prevalent in India. Estimates vary widely between sources as to the extent and scale of child marriages. A 2015–2016 UNICEF report estimated that India's child marriage rate is 27%. The Census of India has counted and reported married women by age, with proportion of females in child marriage falling in each 10 year census period since 1981. Human trafficking in India, although illegal under Indian law, remains a significant problem. People are frequently illegally trafficked through India for the purposes of commercial sexual exploitation and forced/bonded labour. Although no reliable study of forced and bonded labour has been completed, NGOs estimate this problem affects 20 to 65 million Indians. Men, women and children are trafficked in India for diverse reasons. Women and girls are trafficked within the country for the purposes of commercial sexual exploitation and forced marriage, especially in those areas where the sex ratio is highly skewed in favour of men.
