Yutaka Gibbons
Yutaka Miller Gibbons (17 January 1944 – 4 November 2021) was the ibedul of Koror from 1973 until his death in 2021. He was also an anti–nuclear weapons activist and political candidate. Early and personal life Gibbons was born in Palau in 1944. He was of English, Chinese and royal Palauan descent. His younger sister Gloria Salii holds the title of bilung which the female counterpart of ibedul and makes her the highest ranking female chief in Palau. His brother John C. Gibbons was governor of Koror and his other brother Alexander Merep succeeded him as ibedul. Career He worked as a United States Army cook before becoming paramount chief and his sudden departure to become a member of nobility shocked members of his unit at the Presidio of San Francisco as well as others he had earlier served with in West Germany. Ibedul Succession Dispute
There was a Order of succession, succession dispute following the death of Yutaka Gibbons, the ibedul of the state of Koror, Palau, on November 4, 2021. Gibbons' younger siblings, rechucher-ra-techekii Alexander Merep and bilung Gloria Salii, both initially claimed the title, but Salii would later relent her claim in favour of her son, James Lebuu Littler. Merep was accepted as ibedul by the traditional chiefs of Koror and the Council of Chiefs, although Salii maintains that her son is the ibedul. He was the Governor of Koror for 3 consecutive terms from 2006-2018 and stepped down due to the term limits imposed by the Koror State Constitution. The flag of Koror was approved on 10 July 1997 by Ibedul Gibbons and was officially adopted on 25 July 1997. Description The flag's specific construction details are that the width of the flag shall bear a ratio to its length of 1 to 1.667. The diameter of the moon/star circle shall bear a ratio to its width of the flag of 1 to 1.44. The center of the circle shall be placed vertically at the center and horizontally at 1/3 point from the left of the flag. The blue background represents the ocean and the golden moon represents the new government. The six stars represent the six hamlets of Koror State with the larger star in the middle representing the union of the NgaraMeketii and RubekulKeldeu. The traditional ''Bai (house), bai'' house is on a foundation of ten stones symbolic of the ten traditional chiefs.
