Yukon Territory Order Of Polaris
The Order of Polaris is awarded by the Government of Yukon's Transportation Hall of Fame for meritorious service in Yukon in the field of aviation. The Order of Polaris was created by the Government of Yukon in 1973, to honour members of the Canada's Aviation Hall of Fame, especially those who flew over Yukon. The medal and scroll were presented by the Commissioner of Yukon (or designate) at a ceremony at the Transportation Hall of Fame in Whitehorse. This medal is not part of the Canadian Honours System; an official Yukon honour, the Order of Yukon, was established in 2018. Description The award is a simple, circular, silver medal. The obverse has a symbolic representation of the Polar star above and flanked by simulated aerial exhaust trails or stylized wings. Dawn Bartsch
Dawn Bartsch (née Dawson; born 1932) is a Canadian retired bush pilot and flight instructor. Biography Bartsch was born in Penticton, British Columbia, Canada, in 1932. She was interested in becoming a pilot from a young age, although careers counsellors at her high school advised her that becoming a female pilot was impossible, and to train as a nurse instead. Nevertheless, she applied to McGill University's aviation school. She was rejected due to her gender, and had to apply elsewhere until a flight school in Vancouver agreed to give her a place in their programme. The teachers were impressed with her aptitude and skills, however on completion of her studies, in 1951, the government inspector refused to give Bartsch the flying test. Bartsch's teacher persuaded the inspector to take her for the test; he later told the teacher that Bartsch flew so well he couldn't refuse her a license. Walter "Babe" Woollett
Walter "Babe" Woollett (1 January 1906 – 2 June 1998) was a Canadian pilot who was inducted into the Québec Air and Space Hall of Fame on 26 November 2003 and Canada's Aviation Hall of Fame 2004. Aviation career Born in Rochester, Kent, England, Woollett served in the RAF from 1924 until 1929 soon after finding work as a bush pilot in the Fairchild organization at Lac-à-la-Tortue, Quebec. By the end of 1930, he began flying the mail from Saint-Hubert, Quebec to Saint John, New Brunswick for Canadian Airways. During World War II, Woollett was heavily involved in the British Commonwealth Air Training Plan overseeing schools in Ontario and Quebec. After the war, he was appointed Superintendent of Canadian Pacific Air Lines Eastern Division in Mont-Joli and credited with developing their network in the Pacific. Welland Wilfred "Weldy" "Angayuroluk" Phipps (July 23, 1922 – October 22, 1996) was a Canadian military pilot and prisoner of war during World War II, a pioneer bush pilot, inventor and a territorial level politician. World War II Phipps joined the Royal Canadian Air Force and became a fighter pilot in World War II. He was shot down and became a Prisoner of War for 2 years. He succeeded in making an escape from his POW Camp. Aviation Phipps moved to the Northwest Territories after returning home from the war. In 1953 and founded a business called Atlas Aviation, based in Resolute Bay. He invented a new type of balloon tundra tire that allows an aircraft to land safely on tundra. The type of tire is known as the ''Weldy Special''. Atlas Aviation introduced the first regular scheduled airline service to Canada's most northern communities.
