Yukio Edano
is a Japanese politician who served as the leader of the Constitutional Democratic Party of Japan from its formation in 2017 until 2021. A member of the House of Representatives in the Diet since 1993, he served as Chief Cabinet Secretary and Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry in the Democratic Party of Japan (DPJ) government from 2010 to 2012. Following the CDP's poor performance in the 2021 general election, Edano announced on 2 November his intention to resign as leader of the party, triggering a leadership election. Early life Edano was born in Utsunomiya on 31 May 1964. He is named after Japanese progressive liberal political figure Yukio Ozaki, who Edano's father admired. She was the leader of the now-defunct major Japanese opposition party, the Democratic Party. The was a Japanese political party that existed briefly from 1992 to 1994. The party, considered liberal, was founded by Morihiro Hosokawa, a former Diet member and Kumamoto Prefecture governor, who left the Liberal Democratic Party to protest corruption scandals. In 1992, the party elected four members to the House of Councillors, including Hosokawa. Saitama 5th district is a constituency of the House of Representatives in the Diet of Japan (national legislature).
