Yuan (currency)
The yuan (; sign: ¥; ; ) is the base unit of a number of former and present-day currencies in Chinese. A ''yuan'' () is also known colloquially as a ''kuai'' (; originally a lump of silver). One ''yuan'' is divided into 10 ''jiao'' () or colloquially ''mao'' ( "feather"). One ''jiao'' is divided into 10 ''fen'' (). Current usage Today, the term "Yuan" usually refers to the primary unit of account of the renminbi (RMB), the currency of the People's Republic of China. RMB banknotes start at one Yuan and go up to 100 Yuan. It is also used as a synonym of that currency, especially in international contexts – the ISO 4217 standard code for renminbi is CNY, an abbreviation of "Chinese yuan". (A similar case is the use of the terms ''sterling'' to designate British currency and ''pound'' for the unit of account.) The symbol for the yuan (元) is also used in Chinese to refer to the currency units of Japan ''(yen)'' and Korea ''( won)'', and is used to translate the currency u ...

Yuán Qì
In traditional Chinese medicine and Chinese culture, ''yuán qì'' (元氣) is an innate or prenatal qi. This inborn qi is differentiated from acquired qi that a person may develop over their lifetime. Porkert describes the concept as "the metaphorical designation of the inborn constitution, the vital potential that is gradually used up in the course of life. It may be conserved but never replenished." The term has been used since at least the Han Dynasty, where it is found in the chapter 'Lu Li Zhi Shang/律历志上' of the History Book, 'Han Shu.' Usage in Japanese In modern times it has come to be used in a colloquial manner in Japanese (where it is pronounced genki (元気)) to mean "healthy" or "energetic", a usage that has more recently been borrowed back into Chinese. This colloquial usage of the term forms the basis of a variety of Japanese expressions, including the standard casual greeting, genki desu ka (元気ですか), which translates to "are you well?".http://eo ...

Type 041 Submarine
The Type 039A submarine ( NATO reporting name: Yuan class) is a class of diesel-electric submarine in China's People's Liberation Army Navy. It is China's first AIP powered submarine and presumed to be one of the quietest diesel-electric submarine classes in service. This class is the successor of the Type 039 submarine. The official Chinese designation is 039A as the ship is based on the 039 class, but as the 039A has very little resemblance to the 039 it is commonly referred to as the Type 041. The class is designed to replace the aging Type 033 (Romeo class) and the older Type 035 submarines that previously formed the backbone of the conventional submarine force. According to an early assessment by the US Naval Institute, the Yuan class was primarily designed as "an anti-ship cruise missile (ASCM) platform capable of hiding submerged for long periods of time in difficult to access shallow littorals." However, another assessment by USNI includes an open-ocean capability ...

Yuanfen
''Yuán'' () or ''Yuanfen'' (), "fateful coincidence," is a concept in Chinese society describing good and bad chances and potential relationships. It can also be translated as "destiny, luck as conditioned by one's past", or "natural affinity among friends." It is comparable to the concept of ''karma'' in Buddhism, but ''yuanfen'' is interactive rather than individual. The driving forces and causes behind ''yuánfèn'' are said to be actions done in previous incarnations. Scholars Yang Kuo-shu and David Ho have analysed the psychological advantages of this belief: by assigning causality of negative events to ''yuanfen'' beyond personal control, people tend to maintain good relationships, avoid conflict, and promote social harmony; likewise, when positive events are seen as result of ''yuanfen'', personal credit is not directly assigned, which reduces pride on one side of the relationship and envy and resentment on the other. Role in society Yang Kuo-shu and David Ho trace the o ...
