York Township is one of the fourteen townships of Athens County, Ohio, United States. The 2020 census found 6,852 people in the township. Nelsonville-York High School is a public high school in Nelsonville, Ohio, a southeastern Ohio city in northern Athens County. It is the only high school in the Nelsonville-York City School District. Nelsonville-York City Schools serve York Township, Athens County in northern Athens County, including the City of Nelsonville and the Village of Buchtel. The district also serves Ward Township, Hocking County in extreme eastern Hocking County, including the Village of Murray City and the unincorporated community of Carbon Hill. Buchtel, Ohio
Buchtel is a village in Athens and Hocking counties in the U.S. state of Ohio, just northeast of Nelsonville. Located in the Hocking Valley, it was a center of coal mining in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The population was 518 at the 2020 census. A former name for the village is Bessemer. History Buchtel was laid out in 1876, and named for John R. Buchtel, a representative of the Akron Iron Company, which owned a large amount of land in the vicinity, included within the Hocking Valley. A post office called Buchtel has been in operation since 1879. The village was developed to support coal mining in the area. In 1884 mine workers in Buchtel went out on strike, and the company hired Pinkerton guards to protect replacement workers, known as strikebreakers or "Blacklegs". Nelsonville is a city in northwest York Township in Athens County, Ohio. It is 60 miles southeast of Columbus. The population was 4,612 at the 2020 census originally, but an official citywide recount found the population to be 5,373, thus maintaining city status in the State of Ohio. It is the home town of Hocking College. Geography Nelsonville is located at (39.455167, −82.225650), along the Hocking River; Monday Creek flows through the eastern part of the city. One of the main streets, Canal Street, is located over where the old Hocking Canal once ran.
