Yolande Geraldine Paul
Yolande Geraldine Paul is the Minister of Primary Industries and Marine Resources for the Autonomous Region of Bougainville in Papua New Guinea (PNG). Early life Paul grew up in what was then the North Solomons Province of Papua New Guinea. During the Bougainville conflict, when the province tried to break away from PNG, she moved first to the Solomon Islands to continue her education, then to mainland Papua New Guinea and then to Australia. Upon returning to PNG, Paul worked with the Family and Sexual Violence Action Committee (FSVAC) until 2011 addressing gender-based violence, together with locally based civil society organizations (CSOs) around the country. Return to Bougainville In 2011 Paul returned to the, by then, Autonomous Region of Bougainville. Autonomous Region Of Bougainville
Bougainville ( ; ; Tok Pisin: ''Bogenvil''), officially the Autonomous Region of Bougainville (Tok Pisin: ''Otonomos Region bilong Bogenvil''), is an autonomous region in Papua New Guinea. The largest island is Bougainville Island, while the region also includes Buka Island and a number of outlying islands and atolls. The interim capital is Buka, although this is considered temporary, with the capital likely to move. One potential location is Arawa, the previous capital. Bougainville Conflict
The Bougainville conflict, also known as the Bougainville Civil War, was a multi-layered armed conflict fought from 1988 to 1998 in the North Solomons Province of Papua New Guinea (PNG) between PNG and the secessionist forces of the Bougainville Revolutionary Army (BRA), and between the BRA and other armed groups on Bougainville. The conflict was described by Bougainvillean President John Momis as the largest conflict in Oceania since the end of World War II in 1945, with an estimated 15,000–20,000 Bougainvilleans dead, although lower estimates place the toll at around 1,000–2,000. Hostilities concluded under the Bougainville Peace Agreement in 1998. 2020 Bougainvillean General Election
The 2020 presidential and parliamentary election was held in the Autonomous Region of Bougainville between 12 August and 1 September 2020. 440 candidates were contesting the 40 seats in the Bougainville House of Representatives, including 25 competing to be President of the Autonomous Region of Bougainville. The new government will negotiate the outcome of the 2019 Bougainvillean independence referendum, which saw 98.3% of voters supporting independence from Papua New Guinea. Originally scheduled to be held in May, the elections were delayed twice due to the COVID-19 pandemic, first until June, and then again until August. On 21 August 2020 the Electoral Commissioner announced that polling had almost been completed, one week ahead of schedule. Ishmael Toroama
Ishmael Toroama (born 28 February 1969) is a Bougainvillean politician who was elected President of the Autonomous Region of Bougainville in 2020. He is a former commander in the Bougainville Revolutionary Army. Early life Toroama was born in Roreinang in the Kieta District in Central Bougainville and educated at the local school and at Hutjena High School. After dropping out of school, he worked for the Tonolei Development Corporation. Civil war and aftermath Toroama joined the Bougainville Revolutionary Army in the early days of the Bougainville Civil War and quickly became one of its field commanders. In 1997 he was injured by a rocket-propelled grenade. In 1999 he became the BRA's chief of defence, succeeding Sam Kauona. Theonila Roka Matbob
Theonila Roka Matbob (born 1990) is a Bougainvillian politician and Cabinet Minister. She was the second woman in Bougainville to win an open electorate seat in the Bougainville House of Representatives. Roka Matbob is from Ioro in Central Bougainville, and grew up during the Bougainville Civil War. She was educated at Divine Word University and the University of Goroka, and subsequently established a counselling and learning centre in Iora. At the 2020 Bougainvillean general election she contested the seat of Ioro, beating 15 men to win the seat.
