Theonila Roka Matbob
Theonila Roka Matbob (born 1990) is a Bougainvillian politician and Cabinet Minister. She was the second woman in Bougainville to win an open electorate seat in the Bougainville House of Representatives. Roka Matbob is from Ioro in Central Bougainville, and grew up during the Bougainville Civil War. She was educated at Divine Word University and the University of Goroka, and subsequently established a counselling and learning centre in Iora. At the 2020 Bougainvillean general election she contested the seat of Ioro, beating 15 men to win the seat. As minister of education, she was one of two women appointed on 2 October 2020 to the cabinet of the president, Ishmael Toroama, the other being Yolande Geraldine Paul. Ishmael Toroama
Ishmael Toroama (born 28 February 1969) is a Bougainvillean politician who was elected President of the Autonomous Region of Bougainville in 2020. He is a former commander in the Bougainville Revolutionary Army. Early life Toroama was born in Roreinang in the Kieta District in Central Bougainville and educated at the local school and at Hutjena High School. After dropping out of school, he worked for the Tonolei Development Corporation. Civil war and aftermath Toroama joined the Bougainville Revolutionary Army in the early days of the Bougainville Civil War and quickly became one of its field commanders. In 1997 he was injured by a rocket-propelled grenade. In 1999 he became the BRA's chief of defence, succeeding Sam Kauona. The Panguna mine is a large copper mine located in the Autonomous Region of Bougainville, in the east of Papua New Guinea. Panguna represents one of the largest copper reserves in Papua New Guinea and in the world, having an estimated reserve of one billion tonnes of ore copper and twelve million ounces of gold. The mine has been closed since 1989 and has ceased all production. History The discovery of vast copper ore deposits in Bougainville's Crown Prince Range led to the establishment of the copper mine in 1969 by Bougainville Copper Ltd, a subsidiary of the Australian company Conzinc Rio Tinto of Australia. The mine began production in 1972, with the support of the Papua New Guinea National Government as a 20% shareholder. In contrast to this, the Bougainvilleans received 0.5–1.25% share of the total profit. The Bougainville House of Representatives is the legislature of the Autonomous Region of Bougainville, an autonomous entity within Papua New Guinea.
