Yoakum, Texas
Yoakum is a city in Lavaca and DeWitt counties in the U.S. state of Texas. The population was 5,908 at the 2020 census. History The area was sparsely settled until a townsite was laid out with the construction of the San Antonio and Aransas Pass Railway in 1887, and named for Benjamin F. Yoakum, a vice president of the line. The railroad built a roundhouse and maintenance shops there, employing hundreds of workers. The town was incorporated in 1889. According to the ''Handbook of Texas Online'', "By 1896 Yoakum had a cotton mill, three cotton gins, a compress, several churches, a bank, an ice factory, specialty and general stores, two weekly newspapers and one daily, a school system with 700 pupils, and a population of 3,000. By 1914 the number of residents had reached 7,500." In the early 20th century, the Tex-Tan company, later part of the Tandy Corporation, manufactured saddles, bridles, harnesses, belts, and wallets. Shiner, Texas
Shiner is a city in Lavaca County, Texas, United States. The town was named after Henry B. Shiner, who donated for a railroad right-of-way. As of the 2020 United States census, 2020 census, the city had a population of 2,127. Shiner was founded by German and Czech emigrants. History In 1885, a post office called Half Moon was opened at a trading post near the present site of Shiner. In 1887, Henry B. Shiner donated 250 acres for a depot and right-of-way for the San Antonio and Aransas Pass Railway, which bypassed Half Moon and was built through Henry B. Shiner's donated land. The town grew around these transportation facilities. The town initially called itself "New Half Moon", but in 1888, the town's name was changed to Shiner and the town was incorporated in 1890. State Highway 95 (SH 95) is a state highway which connects the cities of Yoakum and Temple in the U.S. state of Texas. Route description The southern terminus of SH 95 is in Lavaca County at US 77 Alt. along the northern edge of Yoakum. The roadway continues south from this point as FM 3475. The highway runs north to Shiner, where it intersects US 90 Alt. It runs roughly parallel to the Union Pacific rail line through Moulton and into Fayette County. In Flatonia, SH 95 crosses both US 90 and I-10 before briefly turning to the northwest. It resumes a more northward course before entering Bastrop County. In the northern part of Smithville, SH 95 begins a concurrency with westbound SH 71. Hochheim ( ) is an unincorporated community in DeWitt County, Texas, United States. It was founded as a settlement for German immigrants along the Guadalupe River. Geography Hochheim is located at , above sea level. It is located on the Texas Coastal Plain. History The Guadalupe River passes through the town, and the present-day site is believed to be the location that Spanish explorers including Alonso de Leon, used to cross the river. Álvar Núñez Cabeza de Vaca is regarded as the first European to encounter the river at this location circa 1528. He named it, "The River of Nuts" due to the large concentration of pecan trees that grow naturally along the river's banks.
