Yelü Sha
Yelü Sha (), courtesy name Anyin (安隱), of the Yelü clan (died 988) was a Khitan general and statesman in imperial China's Liao dynasty. He rose to the position of the chancellor of the southern government (南府宰相) during Emperor Muzong of Liao's reign. When Emperor Jingzong assumed power in 969, Yelü Sha was tasked to command the army on Liao's southern border for possible war against the Song dynasty. In 976, the Song army attacked Northern Han, a small kingdom wedged between Song and Liao, and Yelü Sha took the Liao troops to assist Northern Han until the Song army withdrew. He was promoted when he presented the Song prisoners to Emperor Jingzong. In 977, Song invaded Northern Han again, and Liao army under the overall command of Yelü Sha went to assist Northern Han, meeting the Song army across a river at Baimaling (白馬嶺, in today's Yu County, Shanxi). Generals Of The Yang Family
''The Generals of the Yang Family'' is a collection of Chinese folklore, plays and novels on a military family from the earlier years of imperial China's Song Dynasty (960–1279). The stories recount the unflinching loyalty and the remarkable bravery of the Yangs as they sacrificed themselves to defend their country from foreign military powers, namely the Khitan-ruled Liao Dynasty (907–1125) and Tangut-ruled Western Xia (1038–1227). Spanning the century from 950 to 1050, the mostly fictional saga was based on the lives of historical characters Yang Ye (died 986), Yang Ye's son Yang Yanzhao ( 958–1014) and Yang Yanzhao's son Yang Wenguang (died 1074). The vanguard (also called the advance guard) is the leading part of an advancing military formation. It has a number of functions, including seeking out the enemy and securing ground in advance of the main force. Xiao Chuo
Xiao Yanyan (; 953–1009), also known as Empress Dowager Chengtian (承天皇太后) was a Khitan empress and military leader of imperial China's Liao dynasty. She was regent on behalf of her son from 982. History Xiao Yanyan was the 3rd child of Xiao Siwen (蕭思溫), Liao's chancellor. Also referred to by the name Xiao Chuo, Xiao's original Khitan family name was Bali (拔裏氏). She was the youngest of the Xiao sisters, along with Xiao Hunian and Lady Xiao. Xiao later married Emperor Jingzong of Liao and would go on to bear the crown Prince Yelü Longxu. Battle Of Gaoliang River
The Battle of Gaoliang River () was fought in 979 between the Liao dynasty and Northern Song (960–1127), Northern Song dynasty in present-day Beijing. The Liao victory ended a Song campaign to recapture the Sixteen Prefectures in North China. After founding the Song dynasty in 960, the Emperor Taizu of Song sought to capture the Sixteen Prefectures, which the Liao dynasty acquired in 936 from the Later Jin (Five Dynasties), Later Jin dynasty. His successor, the Emperor Taizong of Song, personally led a military expedition that reached Youzhou in 979, and laid siege to the city. The city's walls, some 16 km in circumference withstood the siege for three months. Defenders were bolstered by Liao reinforcements who were able burrow under the Song siege and into the city itself. Yelü Xiuge
Yelü Xiuge (耶律休哥) (died 998) was an important Khitan general and politician in imperial China's Liao dynasty. He commanded a disciplined army and fought the Song forces for several decades, taking care to not harm any innocent individual. The ''History of Liao'' records that adults in Song Dynasty would yell "Here comes ''Yuyue'' (于越; Yelü Xiuge's title)!" to stop children from crying. Yelü Xiezhen (; died 999), courtesy name Hanyin (韓隱), was a Khitan general and politician in imperial China's Liao dynasty. In 969 Yelü Xiezhen became an important general under Emperor Jingzong of Liao. Along with Yelü Xiuge and Yelü Sha, he fought the Song forces many times.
