Yankuba Drammeh
Yankuba Drammeh is a Gambian military officer who is the current Chief of the Defence Staff in the Gambia. Military career At the time of the 1994 coup d'état, executed by Yahya Jammeh, Drammeh was a Second Lieutenant in the Gambian Army. Like many other officers not involved in the coup, he was detained in the Mile II Central Prison but later released and restored to his previous role. Drammeh was a brigadier general and Deputy Chief of the Defence Staff prior to his dismissal from the army by Yahya Jammeh on 30 November 2009. He was arrested and detained while links to Lang Tombong Tamba's alleged attempted coup were explored. He was cleared of any wrongdoing and was re-instated on 2 December 2009 as a major general in his previous role. Yahya Jammeh
Yahya Abdul-Aziz Jemus Junkung Jammeh (born 25 May 1965) is a Gambian politician and former military officer who was the leader of The Gambia from 1994 to 2017, firstly as chairman of the Armed Forces Provisional Ruling Council (AFPRC) from 1994 to 1996 and then as President of the Gambia from 1996 to 2017. Jammeh was born in Kanilai, in The Gambia, and is a Muslim of the Jola ethnic group. He attended Gambia High School in Banjul from 1978 to 1983 and served in the Gambian National Gendarmerie from 1984 to 1989. He was then commissioned as an officer of the Gambian National Army, commanding the Military Police from 1992 to 1994. Lang Tombong Tamba (born c. 1965) was the Chief of the Defense Staff of the Gambian Armed Forces until his arrest, detention and trial in an attempted coup. Early life and education A Jola, Tamba was born in Sintet, Foni Jarrol and probably lived in Casamance as a child, before attending Nusrat High School. Military career He joined the Gambian National Army (GNA) as a recruit in October 1986. At the time of Yahya Jammeh coup in 1994, he was a Lieutenant and the third in command of the presidential guard unit of President Dawda Jawara. During the coup, he sought to prevent a clash between the coup makers and the presidential guards, and although Jammeh ordered his arrest, the decision was almost immediately reversed.
