Yamaha XV700
The Yamaha XV700 or Virago 700 was a Yamaha V-twin cruiser motorcycle. Made from 1984 to 1987, it was part of Yamaha's Virago A virago is a woman who demonstrates abundant masculine virtues. The word comes from the Latin word ''virāgō'' ( genitive virāginis) meaning vigorous' from ''vir'' meaning "man" or "man-like" (cf. virile and virtue) to which the suffix ''-ā ... line of cruisers. It was informally known as Yamaha's "tariff buster" of the US's 1983 tariff on imported motorcycles with over 700 cc of displacement. When the tariff ended in 1988, Yamaha switched back to the XV750. Yamaha Motor Company

V-twin Engine
A V-twin engine, also called a V2 engine, is a two-cylinder piston engine where the cylinders share a common crankshaft and are arranged in a V configuration. Although widely associated with motorcycles (installed either transversely or longitudinally), V-twin engines have also been used for industrial engines and in several small cars. Yamaha XV1100
The Yamaha Virago XV1100 is a motorcycle manufactured by Yamaha Motor Corporation between 1986 and 1999. It was one of several in the Virago line and was positioned as a large-size cruiser with an engine displacement of . It was one of the few cruiser-style motorcycles available with a shaft drive instead of a chain or belt final drive system, as well as a V-twin engine of that size. Its heavily chromed body styling was also distinctive. History The Virago line was born in 1981 with the XV750. In 1982, the larger ''920'' was introduced alongside the ''750'', with several more deluxe features. The ''920'' was redesigned in 1984 and engine size increased to resulting in the renamed XV1000. A cruiser motorcycle is a motorcycle in the style of American machines from the 1930s to the early 1960s, including those made by Harley-Davidson, Indian, Excelsior and Henderson. The riding position usually places the feet forward and the hands up, with the spine erect or leaning back slightly. Typical cruiser engines emphasize easy rideability and shifting, with plenty of low-end torque but not necessarily large amounts of horsepower, and are traditionally V-twins, but inline engines have become more common. Yamaha Virago
The Yamaha Virago was Yamaha's first V-twin cruiser motorcycle, and one of the earliest mass-produced motorcycles with a mono-shock rear suspension. Originally sold with a ' engine in 1981, Yamaha soon added ' and ' versions. The bike was redesigned in 1984, switching from a rear mono-shock to a dual-shock design, and adding a tear-drop shaped gas tank. That year, Harley-Davidson, fearful of the inroads in the US market made by the Virago and other new Japanese cruiser-style motorcycles, pushed for a tariff on imported bikes over 700 cc. Yamaha replaced the 750 cc engine with a 699 cc version to avoid the tariff, while the 920 cc engine grew to 981 cc (XV1000), and later 1063 cc (XV1100). In 1988 a 250 cc Virago was added. The 1983 motorcycle tariff, or Memorandum on Heavyweight Motorcycle Imports, was a presidential memorandum ordering a 45% tariff on heavyweight motorcycles imported to the United States, signed by President Ronald Reagan on April 1, 1983, on the US International Trade Commission's (USITC) recommendation to approve Harley-Davidson's petition for import relief. The tariff expired in 1988. Background Harley-Davidson was the sole surviving American motorcycle manufacturer. All of the companies models in production were heavyweight motorcycles.
