Yahoo! News Underground
Yahoo! News Underground was a regular Yahoo! News feature series that explored fringe culture in America with reporting brought to life with original songs and music. It was a site dedicated "to subcultures, pastimes, passionate pursuits and pursuers of passion," according to the show's creator and host, Brad Miskell. The series included produced video, photo and written reportage, and made in-roads in the social media space with user generated content and interaction. The site and its content was part of Yahoo! News' move into original content that, at the time, included programming such as Kevin Sites in the Hot Zone and People of the Web. The series premiered on April 1, 2007, leading one journalist to wonder if Underground was an April Fools prank. A ZDNet journalist wrote, "Yahoo gets it, big time" while commenting on the search for the holy grail of user generated content. Yahoo News (stylized as Yahoo! News) is a news website that originated as an internet-based news aggregator by Yahoo. The site was created by Yahoo software engineer Brad Clawsie in August 1996. Articles originally came from news services such as the Associated Press, Reuters, Fox News, Al Jazeera, ABC News, ''USA Today'', CNN and BBC News. In 2000, Yahoo News launched pages tracking the content on the site that was most viewed and most shared by email. The "most emailed" page in particular was noted as an innovation in online news aggregation. Yahoo News allows users to comment on articles. Between late 2006 and early 2010, comments were disabled in part due to moderation challenges. Kevin Sites In The Hot Zone
Kevin Sites (born 1963/1964) is an American author and freelance journalist. He has spent nearly a decade covering news for global wars and disasters for ABC, NBC, CNN, and Yahoo! News. Dubbed by the trade press as the "granddaddy" of backpack journalists, Sites helped blaze the trail for intrepid reporters who work alone, carrying only a backpack of portable digital devices to shoot, write, edit, and transmit multimedia reports from the world's most dangerous places. His first book, ''In the Hot Zone: One Man, One Year, Twenty Wars'' (Harper Perennial-October 2007), shares his effort to put a human face on global conflict by reporting from every major war zone in one year. People Of The Web
People of the Web was a weekly Yahoo! News feature series that profiled the faces behind the Internet. It reported on World Wide Web content creators, particularly the ones "who are really changing the political, social and religious fabric," according to the show's host, award winning journalist Kevin Sites. The format included both video and text stories. Sites cites the focus on the business aspect of web content, and the relative lack of coverage of web personalities as the motivation for the series. Sites' previous project was a year-long series of stories for Yahoo! from various war zones around the world called "Kevin Sites in the Hot Zone", and he brought the same traveling video journalist style to this project. Tribute Bands
A tribute act, tribute band, tribute group or tribute artist is a music group, singer, or musician who specifically plays the music of a well-known music act. Tribute acts include individual performers who mimic the songs and style of an artist, such as Elvis impersonators covering the works of Elvis Presley or groups like The Iron Maidens, an all-female band that pays tribute to Iron Maiden. Many tribute bands, in addition to playing the music of an artist or group, also try to emulate the vocal styles and overall appearance of that group, to make as close an approximation as possible. Others introduce a twist on the original act; for example, Dread Zeppelin plays Led Zeppelin songs in a reggae style with a lead singer dressed up as Elvis Presley, while Gabba perform the songs of ABBA in the style of the Ramones. Krumping is a type of dance culture that evolved through African-American street dancing popularized in the United States during the early 2000s, characterized by free, expressive, exaggerated, and highly energetic movement. The people who originated krumping saw the dance as a means for them to escape gang life. An art car is a vehicle that has had its appearance modified as an act of personal artistic expression. Art cars are often driven and owned by their creators, who are sometimes referred to as "Cartists". Most car artists are ordinary people with no artistic training.
