Yaeko Mizutani
Yaeko Mizutani I (1 August 1905 – 1 October 1979) (水谷八重子 in Japanese, or しょだい みずたに やえこ in kana) was "grande dame of the Japanese stage" and in film from the 1920s through the 1970s. Mizutani's daughter is also an actress called Yaeko Mizutani, so the elder Mizutani is sometimes referred to with an "I" after her name. Early life Mizutani was born in Kagurazaka, Tokyo, daughter of Toyozo and Tome Matsuno. Her father was a watchmaker who died when Yaeko was a small child. She was raised in the household of her older sister and her brother-in-law, writer , whose family name she also used. She attended Futaba Girls' High School. Career Theatre Mizutani began acting in plays as a child. She formed an outdoor theatre company with as a young woman, and she was active in several experimental and artistic theatre companies in the mid-1920s. Kikuchi Kan Prize
The honors achievement in all aspects of Japanese literary culture. It was named in honor of Kikuchi Kan. The prize is presented annually by the literary magazine ''Bungei Shunjū'' and the Society for the Promotion of Japanese Literature. History The original Kikuchi Kan Prize was proposed by Kikuchi as an award to honor the elders of the literary world. It was established in 1938. In keeping with the intent of the prize, the jury was made up of novelists aged 45 or younger, and recipients were novelists aged 46 or older. The prize lapsed after six years, but was revived in 1952 following Kikuchi's death. The range of recipients was enlarged to honor achievements in cinema, broadcasting, and other fields in contemporary literary culture. The jury meets in October to consider works published from September 1 of the previous year through August 31, and awards are announced in the December issue of ''Bungei Shunjū''. Masamitsu Ota
was a Japanese print-maker. He was one of the masters of the shin hanga movement. He was a ''tachiyaku'' actor (performer of male roles), specializing in playing the roles of young, handsome lovers in the ''wagoto'' style, a type of role known as ''nimaime''. Kan'ya is also known for his early postwar film career, and as the adoptive father of Bandō Tamasaburō V, the most famous and popular ''onnagata'' (specialist in female roles) of today.
