Yaakov Bender
Yaakov Bender (born 1950) is an American Orthodox rabbi. He is the rosh hayeshiva (dean) of Yeshiva Darchei Torah (Far Rockaway). He was appointed first as a seventh-grade rebbi (Hebrew teacher) in 1978 and less than a year later as principal. The school's enrollment has grown since then and now exceeds 2,500. Bender is a speaker, writer and adviser on Jewish education. A rabbi () is a spiritual leader or religious teacher in Judaism. One becomes a rabbi by being ordained by another rabbi – known as ''semikha'' – following a course of study of Jewish history and texts such as the Talmud. Orthodox Judaism is the collective term for the traditionalist and theologically conservative branches of contemporary Judaism. Yeshiva Darchei Torah (located in Far Rockaway, Queens, New York, United States) is a private Orthodox Jewish boys' school. History The yeshiva was founded by the late Rabbi Yisroel Bloom and is headed by Rabbi Yaakov Bender, who was described by ''The New York Times'' as "ultra-Orthodox... Litvish or Yeshivish." ''The Jewish Exponent'' is a weekly community newspaper in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and the second-oldest continuously published Jewish newspaper in the United States.
