Y Selar Awards
The Y Selar Awards () are awarded annually for the best Welsh language rock and pop music, by the Welsh language music magazine, ''Y Selar''. The awards ceremony is the only one particularly for Welsh language music. Background The awards were first given out in 2010, in ten categories, with voting taking place via the ''Y Selar'' website, until the publication date of the March issue of the magazine. Every February since 2014 the awards event has taken place at a 'live' event at Aberystwyth University, initially in front of an audience of 500, increasing to 700 in 2015. The organisers claimed an audience of 1,000 in February 2016. Nominations are invited until December each year, for the twelve categories, from which a long list is chosen by the awards panel. Welsh Language
Welsh ( or ) is a Celtic language family, Celtic language of the Brittonic languages, Brittonic subgroup that is native to the Welsh people. Welsh is spoken natively in Wales, by some in England, and in Y Wladfa (the Welsh colony in Chubut Province, Argentina). Geraint Jarman
Geraint Jarman (born 1950 in Denbigh) is a Welsh musician, poet and television producer whose career dates back to the early years of Welsh popular music. He has recorded many albums as a solo artist and with his band Geraint Jarman a'r Cynganeddwyr. BBC Radio Cymru is a Welsh language radio network owned and operated by BBC Cymru Wales, a division of the BBC. It broadcasts on two stations across Wales on FM, DAB, digital TV and online. The main network broadcasts for hours a day from 5:30am to midnight with overnight programming simulcast from the BBC World Service after closedown. A second station, Radio Cymru 2, providing separate music and sports programming, broadcasts on digital and online platforms. Radio Cymru's managing editor is Dafydd Meredydd, a former presenter and producer for both stations. Bwncath
Bwncath (" buzzard") is a Welsh rock-folk or contemporary folk band from Caernarfon. History The four-member band was formed in 2014. The main singer, Elidyr Glyn, won the Alun Sbardun Huws trophy in the Eisteddfod Genedlaethol 2016 for composing the song ''Curiad Y Dydd''. Glyn is also known for winning Cân i Gymru ("Song for Wales") in 2019, with the song ''Fel Hyn 'Da Ni Fod''. The band were described as the busiest and one of the most popular bands in Wales in 2022, performing over 100 gigs and booked to perform every weekend until July 2023. They headlined Saturday in Tafwyl that year. In 2023, Bwncath was described as one of the highlights of "Fel 'Na Mai" ("That's how it is") rock festival in Pembrokeshire. Gwenno Saunders
Gwenno Mererid Saunders (born 23 May 1981) is a Welsh musician, known by the stage name Gwenno. She has released three critically-acclaimed albums as a solo artist: Welsh Music Prize winner'' Y Dydd Olaf'' (2014); ''Le Kov'' (2018), her first album in Cornish; and '' Tresor'' (2022), which was shortlisted for the Mercury Prize. Mared Williams
Mared Williams, known professionally as Mared, is a Welsh singer-songwriter from Llannefydd, north Wales. She won the 2021 Welsh Language Album Award and has won two Y Selar Awards. Life Although she considered studying law, Mared studied music at the University of Leeds until 2018 and then a master's in musical theatre performance at the Royal Academy Of Music. COVID-19 Pandemic In Wales
The COVID-19 pandemic was confirmed to have spread to Wales on 28 February 2020, with a case being reported in the Swansea area; this first known case was a person who had recently returned from Italy. The first known case of community transmission was reported on 11 March in the Caerphilly area. Wide-ranging restrictions began on many aspects of life in the second half of March 2020; restrictions were relaxed in Wales during the summer once the first wave of virus had passed. Gruff Rhys
Gruffudd Maredudd Bowen Rhys (; born 18 July 1970) is a Welsh musician, composer, producer, filmmaker and author. He performs solo and with several bands, including Super Furry Animals, which obtained mainstream success in the 1990s. He formed the electro-pop outfit Neon Neon with Boom Bip.
