YTV Achievement Awards
The YTV Achievement Awards (aka YAA!) was an annual awards ceremony presented by YTV. The ceremony took place annually (except 1991) from 1989 to 2000. The awards were given to young Canadians who had an important contribution in one of several diverse categories. For each awards year, there is an nomination period. Entrants could nominate themselves, or be nominated by someone else. Nominees were required to be 19 or younger. Finalists and winners in each category were selected from the nominees list by a panel of judges. YTV (Canadian TV Channel)
YTV is a Canadian English language specialty channel owned by YTV Canada, Inc., a subsidiary of Corus Entertainment. The channel and its programming is targeted at children and young teenagers; its name was originally thought to be an abbreviation for "Youth Television", though the channel's website has denied this. The channel was launched on September 1, 1988 by owners Rogers Media and CUC Broadcasting upon launch. In 1995, Shaw Communications acquired CUC's 34% stake and in 1998, it acquired Rogers' remaining interest of the channel, before Shaw's media division was spun off to form Corus Entertainment in 1999. Under Corus ownership, YTV sources most of its programming from U.S.-based Nickelodeon and launched its own dedicated TV channel several years later. Curt Harnett
Curtis "Curt" Melvin Harnett, (born 14 May 1965) is a Canadian racing cyclist. He began cycling as a way to stay in shape for hockey. He competed in four Olympic Games, winning three medals, one silver and two bronze. Harnett also has three medals from the Commonwealth Games and three medals from the Pan American Games. He held the world record for the 200 metre time trial for 11 years, bested in 2006 by Dutchman Theo Bos. After retiring from cycling in 1996, he attended the Sydney and Athens Olympic Games as a commentator for CBC Sports. He was inducted into Canada's Sports Hall of Fame in 2005. Stephen Kent, MHA, (born May 7, 1978) is a former Canadian politician in Newfoundland and Labrador. Plumtree (band)
Plumtree was a Canadian indie rock/power pop band formed in 1993 in Halifax which consisted of sisters Carla and Lynette Gillis, Amanda Braden, Nina Martin, and later Catriona Sturton. The band achieved moderate success during their seven years of activity, completing several tours of Canada and parts of the U.S., as well as releasing three full-length albums, a six track EP, and various singles, before finally disbanding in June 2000. Their single "Scott Pilgrim" was the inspiration for the title character in the graphic novel series by Bryan Lee O'Malley. Measha Brueggergosman (née Gosman; June 28, 1977) is a Canadian soprano who performs both as an opera singer and concert artist. She has performed internationally and won numerous awards. Her recordings of both classical and popular music have also received awards. Background She was born Measha Gosman in Fredericton, New Brunswick, to Anne Eatmon and Sterling Gosman.
