XETRA-FM
XETRA-FM (91.1 MHz), branded as 91X, and sometimes identified as XTRA-FM, is an English-language radio station licensed to Tijuana, Baja California, Mexico. It airs an alternative rock radio format. The studios and offices are on Cornerstone Court in San Diego's Sorrento Valley neighborhood. The station is one of three Mexican outlets programmed by Local Media San Diego LLC, along with XHITZ-FM and XHRM-FM, in which an affiliated company owns a 49 percent non-voting stake; LMSD also owns KFBG. It is Mexico's first Alternative radio station, and has influenced other radio stations (including XHMORE) to create the Spanish-language rock radio format in 1994. As a Mexican station, XETRA-FM must carry mandated public service announcements, electoral advertising, the Mexican National Anthem at midnight and 5 a.m. daily, and '' La Hora Nacional'' on Sunday nights. XHITZ-FM (Z90.3) is an English-language Contemporary Hit Radio, Top 40 (CHR) radio station in San Diego-Tijuana, broadcasting at 90.3 Hertz, MHz. The station is owned by Comunicación XERSA, S.A. de C.V., a Mexico, Mexican broadcast company. 49 percent of the concessionaire is owned by an American company, Local Media San Diego, which holds the right to use the frequency and programs the station from studios in the Sorrento Valley, San Diego, Sorrento Valley neighborhood of San Diego, along with two other Mexican FM stations broadcasting in English, Alternative Rock-formatted XETRA-FM and Rhythmic adult contemporary, Rhythmic AC-formatted XHRM-FM. KFBG (100.7 FM, "100.7 Big FM") is a commercial radio station that is licensed to San Diego, California and broadcasts an adult hits format. The station is owned by Local Media San Diego. It shares studios with LMSD's other stations in the Sorrento Valley section of San Diego, and its transmitter is atop Mount Soledad in La Jolla. History as KFMB-FM Jazz (1959–1960) A sister station to existing AM station KFMB (760 AM) under the ownership of Transcontinent Television Corporation, the station signed on as KFMB-FM on 100.7 FM on September 21, 1959, initially with a jazz format. XEWW-AM
XEWW-AM (690 kHz) is a commercial AM radio station licensed to the Tijuana/Rosarito area of Baja California, Mexico. Its studios and offices are located in Burbank, California, United States and it is leased by H&H USA. Transmitter XEWW is a high-powered Class A station, with its 77,000-watt daytime signal sometimes reaching as far as the middle of the San Joaquin Valley. It covers nearly all of Southern California and most of Baja California. XEWW operates with 50,000 watts at night as is required by the "Rio Treaty." This same treaty would normally allow XEWW to operate with a daytime signal of 100,000 watts. However, 77,000 watts was apparently selected as this power sends the equivalent of the station's former 50,000-watt daytime signal (from its original Tijuana site, since demolished) towards Los Angeles without also increasing its prohibited overlap with KIRN (670 AM) in Simi Valley and KSPN (710 AM) in Los Angeles (from its present Rosarito site). Album-oriented rock (AOR, originally called album-oriented radio) is an FM radio format created in the United States in the 1970s that focuses on the full repertoire of rock albums and is currently associated with classic rock. Album-oriented radio was originally established by U.S. radio stations dedicated to playing album tracks by rock artists from the hard rock to progressive rock genres. In the mid-1970s, AOR was characterized by a layered, mellifluous sound and sophisticated production with considerable dependence on melodic hooks. Classic alternative is a radio format focusing on alternative music from the late 1970s to early 1990s, with particular focus on the early days of MTV. Border Blaster
A border blaster is a broadcast station that, though not licensed as an external service, is, in practice, used to target another country. The term "border blaster" is of North American origin, and usually associated with Mexican AM stations whose broadcast areas cover large parts of the United States, and United States border AM stations covering large parts of Canada. Conceptually similar European broadcasting included some pre-World War II broadcasting towards the United Kingdom, " radio périphérique" around France and the U.S. government-funded station Radio Free Europe, targeting eastern Europe. ''La Hora Nacional'' (The National Hour) is a radio program produced by the General Directorate of Radio, Television and Film (RTC) of the Mexican Secretariat of the Interior. The one-hour program airs at 10p.m. on Sundays on all Mexican radio stations as required by Mexican broadcasting law. History ''La Hora Nacional'' debuted on July 25, 1937, when it aired on station XEDT, then the station of the presidential Autonomous Department of Press and Propaganda. In broadcasting and radio communications, a call sign (also known as a call name or call letters—and historically as a call signal—or abbreviated as a call) is a unique identifier for a transmitter station. A call sign can be formally assigned by a government agency, informally adopted by individuals or organizations, or even cryptographically encoded to disguise a station's identity. The use of call signs as unique identifiers dates to the landline railroad telegraph system. Because there was only one telegraph line linking all railroad stations, there needed to be a way to address each one when sending a telegram. In order to save time, two-letter identifiers were adopted for this purpose. This pattern continued in radiotelegraph operation; radio companies initially assigned two-letter identifiers to coastal stations and stations onboard ships at sea.
