Xtream Arena powered by Mediacom is a multipurpose arena in Coralville, Iowa, that opened in September 2020. The main tenants of the arena are the Iowa Hawkeyes volleyball teams and the professional ice hockey team Iowa Heartlanders of the ECHL. History In 2019, Mediacom was announced as the naming rights partner via its Xtream brand. The city lost its investment-grade bond rating as a result of the project. Tenants The arena serves as the home court of the nearby University of Iowa's volleyball team. Developers had expressed interest in luring a USHL or ECHL franchise. On September 17, 2020, the city announced it had come to an agreement to host an ECHL team that was approved to begin play for in the 2021–22 season named the Iowa Heartlanders. Coralville is a city in Johnson County, Iowa, Johnson County, Iowa, United States. Iowa Hawkeyes
The Iowa Hawkeyes are the athletic teams that represent the University of Iowa, located in Iowa City, Iowa. The Hawkeyes have varsity teams in 22 sports, 8 for men and 14 for women; a 15th women's sport will be added in 2023. The teams participate in Division I of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) and are members of the Big Ten Conference. Currently, the school's athletic director is Gary Barta. Historically, Iowa has been very successful in wrestling, with 37 team Big Ten championships and 24 team national championships. The Iowa Heartlanders are a professional minor league ice hockey team in the ECHL based in Coralville, Iowa. The team began play in the 2021–22 ECHL season, playing their home games at Xtream Arena. History On September 17, 2020, Newfoundland Growlers' majority owner Dean MacDonald (through his group Deacon Sports and Entertainment) came to an agreement with the city of Coralville to place an ECHL team in Xtream Arena, pending league approval, for the 2021–22 season. On January 12, 2021, the team was approved by the ECHL Board of Governors to join the league for the 2021–22 season. The ECHL (formerly the East Coast Hockey League) is a mid-level professional ice hockey league based in Shrewsbury, New Jersey, with teams scattered across the United States and Canada. It is a tier below the American Hockey League (AHL). The United States Hockey League (USHL) is the top junior ice hockey league sanctioned by USA Hockey.
