Xinjiangchelyidae is an extinct family of turtles known from the Lower Jurassic to the Middle Cretaceous of Asia and western Europe. They have generally been interpreted as either being basal cryptodires or placed outside of crown Testudines. Itat Formation
The Itat Formation (Russian: итатская свита) is a geologic formation in western Siberia. It was deposited in the Bajocian to Bathonian ages of the Middle Jurassic. Dinosaur remains are among the fossils that have been recovered from the formation, including the proceratosaurid ''Kileskus'', as well as fish, amphibians, mammals and many other vertebrates. The formation is noted for bearing significant coal reserves, with large open pit coal mines extracting lignite from the unit currently in operation. Lithology The lower section of the formation is around 50–130 m thick, and consists of light grey sandstones with gravel, siltstone and rare coal beds. At the Dubinino locality, the 50 m exposed section of the upper part of the formation shows an irregular rhythmic alteration of fine grained sandstone, siltstone and mudstone and coal seams typically a few tens of cm's but up to several meters thick. Phu Kradung Formation
The Early Cretaceous Phu Kradung Formation is the lowest member of the Mesozoic Khorat Group which outcrops on the Khorat Plateau in Isan, Thailand. This geological formation consists of micaceous, brown to reddish-brown siltstone beds with minor brown and grey shale and sandstone beds. Brodiechelys
''Brodiechelys'' is an extinct genus of terrestrial turtle belonging to the family Xinjiangchelyidae. Remains of ''Brodiechelys'' dated back to the Early Cretaceous period (Berriasian to Barremian stages), and have been found in the United Kingdom and Spain. The type species, ''B. brodiei'', was thought to only come from the Wealden of the United Kingdom, however, specimens of ten shells were found in the locality of Brighstone Bay in the Wessex Sub-basin of the Isle of Wight, UK. Fragmentary specimens of shell corresponding to an indeterminate species were also found outside Wealden; these specimens were unearthed in the Weald Sub-basin of Sussex, UK. Cryptodira
The Cryptodira ('' el, hidden neck'') are a suborder of Testudines that includes most living tortoises and turtles. Cryptodira differ from Pleurodira (side-necked turtles) in that they lower their necks and pull the heads straight back into the shells, instead of folding their necks sideways along the body under the shells' marginals. They include among their species freshwater turtles, snapping turtles, tortoises, softshell turtles, and sea turtles. Neck retraction The Cryptodira are characterized by retraction of the head in the vertical plane, which permits for primarily vertical movements and restricted lateral movements outside of the shell. The Ulan Malgait Formation is a Late Jurassic geologic formation in Mongolia.
