Xaar
Xaar (foaled 1995) was a British-bred Thoroughbred racehorse and sire, best known for his performances as a two-year-old in 1997. In his juvenile season, he won four of his five races, including the Prix de Cabourg and Prix de la Salamandre in France and the Dewhurst Stakes in England. In 1998, he won the Craven Stakes on his debut, but was beaten in his remaining three races. After two further defeats in 1999, he was retired to stud, where he had limited success as a sire of winners. Background Xaar was a very dark-coated bay horse with a white star and strip bred in Britain by Khalid Abdulla's Juddmonte Farms. He was sired by the 2000 Guineas winner Zafonic out of Monroe, a mare who won the Ballyogan Stakes. Dewhurst Stakes
The Dewhurst Stakes is a Group 1 flat horse race in Great Britain open to two-year-old colts and fillies. It is run on the Rowley Mile at Newmarket over a distance of 7 furlongs (1,408 metres), and it is scheduled to take place each year in October. It is Britain's most prestigious race for juvenile horses. The leading participants usually become major contenders for the following season's Classics. History The event was founded by Thomas Gee, who was a close friend of Karl Pearson's father. It was established in 1875 and was originally titled the "Dewhurst Plate". André Fabre
André Fabre (born 9 December 1945) is a French thoroughbred horse racing trainer. The son of a diplomat, Fabre graduated from university with a law degree but then decided to pursue a career in thoroughbred horse racing. He began by working in the stables as a groom then as a schooling rider. He became France's leading jump jockey, winning more than two hundred and fifty races including the Grand Steeple-Chase de Paris. When he turned to training horses, Fabre proved even more successful, first with jump horses then with flat racers. He has been the champion trainer in France on 24 occasions, including 21 straight years from 1987 to 2007, and is one of the most successful trainers in the world, winning across Europe and North America including four Breeders' Cup races. Craven Stakes
The Craven Stakes is a Group 3 flat horse race in Great Britain open to three-year-old colts and geldings. It is run over a distance of 1 mile (1,609 metres) on the Rowley Mile at Newmarket in mid-April. History The event is named after William Craven, 6th Baron Craven, a member of the Jockey Club in the 18th century. His support for racing at Newmarket led to the introduction of the Craven Meeting in 1771. The first race had a subscription of 5 guineas, to which 21 subscribed. It was to be run "from the ditch to the turn of the lands." The race was won by Pantaloon, owned by a Mr Vernon. Fourteen horses had taken part. Zafonic
Zafonic (1 April 1990 – 7 September 2002) was a European Thoroughbred racehorse bred in Kentucky. He was the 1992 European Champion Two-Year-Old Colt and won the following year's 2,000 Guineas. Background Zafonic was sired by the Mr. Prospector stallion Gone West, out of the Seaton Delaval Stakes winner Zaizafon, a daughter of The Minstrel. He was owned and bred by Khalid Abdullah and conditioned by the French trainer André Fabre. Racing career Racing at age two, Zafonic went undefeated. The Prix de Cabourg is a Group 3 flat horse race in France open to two-year-old thoroughbreds. It is run at Deauville over a distance of 1,200 metres (about 6 furlongs), and it is scheduled to take place each year in late July or early August. History The event was created by the Société d'Encouragement in 1921. The organisation had taken over the duties of the Société des Courses de Deauville upon the death of its chairman Jacques Le Marois the previous year. The race was named after the nearby commune of Cabourg, and it was initially contested over 1,200 metres. Deauville Racecourse was closed during World War II, and the Prix de Cabourg was not run from 1940 to 1945. It was cut to 900 metres in 1955, and its distance was frequently modified in the period thereafter. Prix De La Salamandre
The Prix de la Salamandre was a Group 1 flat horse race in France open to two-year-old thoroughbred colts and fillies. It was run at Longchamp over a distance of 1,400 metres (about 7 furlongs), and it was scheduled to take place each year in September. History The event was established in 1872, and it was originally held at Chantilly. For a period it was staged in October. The race was transferred to Longchamp in 1907. That year's running was contested over 1,600 metres, and had prize money of 10,000 francs. It was cut to 1,400 metres and increased to 15,000 francs in 1908. The present system of race grading was introduced in 1971, and the Prix de la Salamandre was classed at Group 1 level. The race was last run in 2000. Rags to Riches (foaled February 27, 2004, in Kentucky) is a champion American Thoroughbred racehorse who won the 2007 Belmont Stakes, the first filly to win it in over a century. Maisons-Laffitte Racecourse
The Hippodrome de Maisons-Laffitte at 1 avenue de la Pelouse in the northwestern Parisian suburb of Maisons-Laffitte in France was a grass, turf horse racing facility and Hippodrome, track for Thoroughbred flat racing. Opened in 1878 by Joseph Oller, inventor of the Parimutuel betting, pari-mutuel machine, it sits on 92 hectares that belonged to the wealthy banker Jacques Laffitte. The nearby Château de Maisons, Château de Maisons-Laffitte is home to The Museum of the Racehorse. In November 2018 France Galop announced that the racecourse would close at the end of 2019 due to financial pressures on the organisation. The final meeting was held on 29th October 2019. Despite the efforts of local government officials there are no plans to re-open the track and the racing surface has been allowed fall into disrepair. Thierry Jarnet (born 24 March 1967) is a champion thoroughbred flat racing jockey in France who won the title four times between 1992–1995. Jarnet was first apprenticed to Patrick Rago at Maisons-Laffitte and then to Yann Porzier at Chantilly, Oise. History Jarnet rode his first winner in February 1985 at Cagnes-sur-Mer on a horse called ''Danini''. Jarnet rode 137 winners in France between 1985 and 1990. In November 1990 Jarnet signed up to ride for the trainer André Fabre.
