Matamoros, officially known as Heroica Matamoros, is a city in the northeastern Mexican state of Tamaulipas, and the municipal seat of the homonymous municipality. In the broadcasting industry, a dark television station or silent radio station is one that has gone off the air for an indefinite period of time. Usually unlike dead air (broadcasting only silence), a station that is dark or silent does not even transmit a carrier signal. It received its concession on August 11, 1960, and was owned by Manuel L. Salinas. The original operating frequency was 98.1 MHz, with 1,000 watts ERP. Salinas died later in the 1960s, and his successors received control of the station in 1967. In 1986, XHMLS was sold to Radiodifusoras Unidas Mexicanas de Matamoros.
