Wyndham Estate
Wyndham Estate was a leading winery in the Hunter Region, in New South Wales, Australia. It was founded by George Wyndham, who came to Australia in 1827 and planted a vineyard around his home, Dalwood, in the Hunter Valley. The winery won four gold medals, seven silver medals, and two bronze medals for its wines at the 1982 International Wine and Spirit Competition in England. The company was owned by Premium Wine Brands (previously Pernod Ricard Pacific). It closed in 2014. In 2016 the property was purchase by Iris Capital, who reverted the winery to its original 1828 establishment name Dalwood Estate Dalwood is a village and county parish in the East Devon district of the English county of Devon. Hunter Region
The Hunter Region, also commonly known as the Hunter Valley, is a region of New South Wales, Australia, extending from approximately to north of Sydney. It contains the Hunter River and its tributaries with highland areas to the north and south. Situated at the northern end of the Sydney Basin bioregion, the Hunter Valley is one of the largest river valleys on the NSW coast, and is most commonly known for its wineries and coal industry. Most of the population of the Hunter Region lives within of the coast, with 55% of the entire population living in the cities of Newcastle and Lake Macquarie. George Wyndham (winemarker)
George Wyndham (20 June 1801 – 24 December 1870) was an English farmer, wine-grower and pastoralist; he is famous for having established the Wyndham wineries and his estate Dalwood in the Hunter Valley, where he planted Australia's first commercial Shiraz vineyard. He played first-class cricket in England in his youth. Early life Born in 1801 in Dinton, Wiltshire England, Wyndham was the third son of William Wyndham and Letitia, née Popham. He was educated at Harrow School and Trinity College, Cambridge with the goal to enter the Church of England. He is recorded as playing first-class cricket for Cambridge University in two matches in 1820 and 1821, totalling 12 runs with a highest score of 6 and taking 7 wickets. In 1824 Wyndham emigrated to Canada, traveling with John Galt the secretary of the Canada Company. Dalwood House
Dalwood House is a heritage-listed homestead and now house museum at Dalwood Road, Branxton, Singleton Council, New South Wales, Australia. It was built from 1829 to 1838 by George Wyndham. It sits in the grounds of the former Wyndham Estate winery (now known as Dalwood Estate). It was added to the New South Wales State Heritage Register on 2 April 1999. History In 1823 David Maziere acquired a 2,000 acre crown land grant in the Hunter Valley. He called the property Anandale Estate and set about fencing stock yards and paddocks and cultivating 60 acres of land. Due to insolvency, Anandale Estate was put up for auction in January 1828 and purchased for 1,200 pounds by George Wyndham. Wyndham and his wife Margaret had arrived in Australia in 1827. International Wine And Spirit Competition
The International Wine & Spirit Competition is an annual wine and spirit competition founded in 1969 by the German/British oenologist Anton Massel. Each year the competition receives entries from over 90 countries worldwide. The awards given by the competition are considered as high honors in the industry. The event occurs annually in November, in London. Only products which pay the entry fee of £140 per category are judged, and three/four bottles of each product must be supplied. Depending on the points out of 100 awarded, submitted products can receive gold outstanding, gold, silver outstanding, silver, or bronze awards, and there are no limitations on how many of each which can be awarded. Dalwood is a village and county parish in the East Devon district of the English county of Devon. It is approximately away from the nearest town, Axminster, and away from Honiton. Dalwood can be accessed by the nearby A35 road. The village is placed within the Blackdown Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Along with the nearby village of Stockland, until 1842 the village was a part of an outlier of the county of Dorset. Dalwood is a small village with a church, a primary school, village hall and public house. St Peter's church is 15th century and was restored in 1881. It has some early stained glass windows.
