World Rally Championship Support Categories
Since its inaugural season in 1973, the World Rally Championship has been supported by a series of additional categories. These categories, created and endorsed by the Fédération Internationale de l'Automobile (FIA)—the governing body of motorsport—were created to encourage participation from entries in classes that would otherwise be ineligible to score points in the World Championship or its primary feeder series, the World Rally Championship-2 and World Rally Championship-3. Over time, these support categories were created and changed in line with trends within the sport itself and motorsport as a whole. Drive DMACK Fiesta Trophy The Drive DMACK Fiesta Trophy was a series run between 2014 and 2016. It was created after Citroën won the bid to supply cars for the Junior World Rally Championship from M-Sport. 1973 World Rally Championship
The 1973 World Rally Championship was the inaugural season for the Fédération Internationale de l'Automobile (FIA) World Rally Championship (WRC) format. It consisted of 13 events, each held in a different country of the world. Many of the events would be staples of the series through to today, including Monte Carlo, Sweden, Tour de Corse, and the RAC Rally, while others would soon be replaced in the schedule. As with following seasons, gravel events formed the majority of the schedule. Two pure tarmac and one snow and ice rally were also included, as well as three events held on a mixture of soft and hard surface roads. The first award of the Championship for Manufacturers was firmly won by Alpine-Renault, which had already gained fame competing for the earlier International Championship for Manufacturers. François Delecour
François Delecour (born 30 August 1962) is a French rally driver. Biography Career in World Rally Championship François Delecour began rallying in 1981, in the French national championship. He entered his first major event, the Monte Carlo Rally, three years later, driving a Talbot Samba. He was co driven by his then girlfriend Anne Chantal Pauwels. For 1985 and 1986 he drove in the Peugeot 205 Cup, finishing third in both seasons. This was enough to earn him a degree of support from the Peugeot works team for subsequent years, culminating in a full works drive in a Peugeot 309 in 1989 and 1990, in which year he finished ninth overall and first two-wheel-drive car on the Monte Carlo. Delecour was then hired by the Ford team to contest the 1991 World Championship. 2015 FIA R-GT Cup
The 2015 FIA R-GT Cup was the first edition of the FIA rally cup for GT cars in Group R-GT. The cup was contested over 5 tarmac rounds from the World and European rally championships. The championship was won by François Delecour in a Tuthill-prepared Porsche 997, winning two rallies – in Monte Carlo and Corsica – and finishing in second place in Ypres and Germany. With 86 points, Delecour scored exactly double the tally of second-placed driver Romain Dumas, who won in Germany and finished second to Delecour in Monte Carlo. Third place in the championship went to Marc Duez, who finished third on both events he contested – Monte Carlo and Ypres – while Patrick Snijers won his only event, in Ypres. European Rally Championship
The European Rally Championship (officially FIA European Rally Championship) is an rallying, automobile rally competition held annually on the European continent and organized by the Fédération Internationale de l'Automobile (FIA). The championship has been organized since 1953 and has competed in different European countries, alternating between rallies on asphalt and gravel. It was the first supranational rally championship that was organized in the world and therefore the oldest one. In 2012 it had 60 editions and in 2013 it was renewed with the merger with the Intercontinental Rally Challenge. Group R
In relation to motorsport governed by the Fédération Internationale de l'Automobile, Group R refers to a set of regulations providing production-derived vehicles for rally competition. The Group R regulations were created in 2008 as a gradual replacement for Group A and Group N rally cars. To comply with Group R regulations, a car must be homologated in Group A (or in some cases Group N) and receive one or more VR extensions. Each VR extension is a set of homologated parts and modifications, designed and sold (as a kit or as a complete car) by the manufacturer. As part of its structure, the Group R regulations have a provision for GT cars, known as R-GT. Classes Group R consists of six classes, designated R1, R2, R3, R4, R5 and R-GT; some of these groups contain their own sub-groups, with cars allocated to each group based on their weight, engine size and powertrain. A grand tourer (GT) is a type of car that is designed for high speed and long-distance driving, due to a combination of performance and luxury attributes. The most common format is a front-engine, rear-wheel-drive two-door coupé with either a two-seat or a 2+2 arrangement. Grand tourers are most often the coupé derivative of luxury saloons or sedans. The term is a near-calque from the Italian language phrase ''gran turismo'' which became popular in the English language from the 1950s, evolving from fast touring cars and streamlined closed sports cars during the 1930s. The 2016 Drive DMACK Fiesta Trophy is the third season of the Drive DMACK Fiesta Trophy, an auto racing championship recognized by the Fédération Internationale de l'Automobile, running in support of the World Rally Championship. It uses Ford Fiesta R2Ts. It was also the last season of the series, as the suppliers of the Junior WRC changed from Citroen to M-Sport in 2017.
