World Bowls Championship
The World Bowls Championship is the premier world bowls competition between national bowls organisations. The premier indoor event is the World Indoor Bowls Championships listed separately and is organised by the World Bowls Tour. World Outdoor Championships First held in Australia in 1966, the World Outdoor Bowls Championships for men and women are held every four years. From 2008 the men's and women's events were held together. Qualifying national bowls organisations (usually countries) are represented by a team of five players, who play once as a single and a four, then again as a pair and a triple. Gold, silver, and bronze medals are awarded in each of the four disciplines, and there is also a trophy for the best overall team — the Leonard Trophy for men and the Taylor Trophy for women. Bill O'Neill (bowls)
William P. O'Neill (1909 – date of death unknown) was a New Zealand international lawn bowler. Bowls career He competed in the first World Bowls Championship in Kyeemagh, New South Wales, Australia in 1966 and won a gold medal in the fours with Norm Lash, Ron Buchan and Gordon Jolly at the event. He won the 1954, 1960 and 1963 fours title at the New Zealand National Bowls Championships when bowling for the Carlton Bowls Club. Peter A Line is a former English international lawn and indoor bowler. Bowls career World Championships Line won the fours gold medal with Norman King, Cliff Stroud and Ted Hayward at the 1972 World Outdoor Bowls Championship in Worthing. Four years later, he won two more medals: a bronze medal in the fours with John C Evans, Bill Irish and Tommy Armstrong and a silver medal in the team event (Leonard Cup). William McConnell Miller (1910–2004), was a Scottish born United States international lawn bowler. Bowls career He emigrated to the United States in 1928, joined the Gary Bowls Club in 1939 and became a United States citizen one year later in 1940. He won a gold medal in the triples with Dick Folkins and Clive Forrester at the 1972 World Outdoor Bowls Championship in Worthing Worthing () is a seaside town in West Sussex, England, at the foot of the South Downs, west of Brighton, and east of Chichester. Clementi Cecil Delgado
Clementi Cecil Delgado better known as Saco Delgado (1930-1997), was a Hong Kong international lawn and indoor bowler. Bowls career Delgado was born in Hong Kong in 1930 to Portuguese parents and was an accountant before he started bowling in 1958. He won the Hong Kong lawn bowls championship ten times before winning the rinks/fours gold medal at the 1970 British Commonwealth Games in Edinburgh. He won the gold medal in the pairs with Eric Liddell at the 1972 World Outdoor Bowls Championship in Worthing in addition to a bronze medal in the fours event. Eric Liddell (bowls)
Eric John Liddell (10 August 1924 – 28 April 1991) was an Australian-born Hong Kong international lawn and indoor bowler. Bowls career Liddell was born in Bairnsdale, Victoria, on 10 August 1924, to Edward and Victoria Liddell. He served for four and a half years during the Second World War. He emigrated to Hong Kong in 1951 and represented Hong Kong at the 1954 British Empire and Commonwealth Games and competing in six consecutive Commonwealth Games from 1954 until 1978. He won the gold medal in the pairs with Saco Delgado at the 1972 World Outdoor Bowls Championship in Worthing and eight years later was part of the fours team that won the gold medal at the 1980 World Outdoor Bowls Championship in Melbourne. Maldwyn Evans
Maldwyn Lewis Evans (8 November 1937 – 30 December 2009), often known as "Mal" Evans, was a Welsh bowls champion, who won the World Championship in 1972. He is the only Welshman ever to have held the men's singles title. Personal life Evans was born in Gelli, Rhondda. His father, Clifford Maldwyn Evans, won the Welsh Pairs Championship in 1952 with his brother (Maldwyn's uncle) John Morgan Evans (1917-1985), a world-class player. Maldwyn Evans was educated at Pentre Secondary School and later obtained a degree in history from University College of North Wales Bangor. He worked as a teacher in Swansea, Porth, Tonypandy and Ferndale. Bowls career Evans played bowls for Wales from 1967 until 1985, and he was a member of the Gelli Park club. The 1972 Men's World Outdoor Bowls Championship was held at Beach House Park in Worthing, England, from 5 to 17 June 1972. Maldwyn Evans won the singles which was held in a round robin format.
