Workers Revolutionary Party (UK)
The Workers Revolutionary Party is a Trotskyist group in Britain once led by Gerry Healy. In the mid-1980s, it split into several smaller groups, one of which retains possession of the name. The Club The WRP grew out of the faction Gerry Healy and John Lawrence led in the Revolutionary Communist Party which urged that the RCP pursue entryist tactics in the Labour Party. This policy was also urged on the RCP by the leadership of the Fourth International. When the majority in the RCP rejected the policy in 1947, Healy's faction was granted the right to split from the RCP and work within the Labour Party as a separate body known internally as The Club. A year later the majority faction of the RCP decided to join The Club in the Labour Party. Healy called for a massive educational effort within the organisation, which angered the old leadership. The News Line
''The News Line'' is a daily newspaper published by a British Trotskyist group, the Workers' Revolutionary Party. History The paper was launched in 1969 as ''Workers Press'' and renamed ''News Line'' in 1976. For a time during the 1980s, the WRP split into two rival factions, and for a short time there were two versions of ''The News Line'' being produced every day, one by each faction. Cliff Slaughter
Cliff Slaughter (October 1928 – 3 May 2021) was a British socialist activist, sociologist and author. His best-known works are ''Coal is Our Life'' (written with Norman Dennis and Fernando Henriques) and ''Marxism, Ideology and Literature''. In 2006, Slaughter published the book ''Not Without a Storm: Towards a Communist Manifesto for the Age of Globalisation'', followed by the book ''Bonfire of the Certainties: The Second Human Revolution'' in 2013. Biography Early life Cliff Slaughter was born in Doncaster in October 1928 to Frederick Arthur Slaughter, a coalminer from Oxfordshire, and Annie Elizabeth Stokeld. The couple would later have two more children, Keith and Nancy. Michael Banda (1930 – 29 August 2014), born Michael Alexander Van Der Poorten, was a Sri Lankan communist activist best known as the General Secretary of the British Workers Revolutionary Party. Early life and relocation to the UK Born in Sri Lanka, Banda attended Trinity College, Kandy, alongside his brother, Tony. The two were convinced by teacher Hilary Abeyaratne to join the Bolshevik–Leninist Party of India, Ceylon and Burma, a Trotskyist organisation affiliated to the Fourth International. International Socialist League (UK)
The International Socialist League is a small Trotskyist organisation in the UK. The group's origins lie in the disintegration of the Workers' Revolutionary Party (WRP) in the 1980s. It was founded as the Bolshevik Faction of Cliff Slaughter's WRP in August 1987 and from the start was sympathetic to the Latin American-based Trotskyist leader Nahuel Moreno. In February 1988 the future ISL split from the WRP and under the leadership of the veteran Bill Hunter and Martin Ralph founded their organisation, which affiliated to Moreno's International Workers League (LIT). The ISL remains active in the North West of England, London, South Wales and the East of England and was active in the Socialist Alliance. The Workers International to Rebuild the Fourth International (WIRFI) is a Trotskyist international organisation. It was formed and based in the United Kingdom and originally consisted of a remnant of the Workers Revolutionary Party. The organisation was founded in 1990 to regroup the international supporters of the Workers Revolutionary Party (Workers Press) WRP(WP), following the split of some of their supporters to join the International Workers League (Fourth International). Led by Cliff Slaughter and Dot Gibson, it initially had support in the Workers Revolutionary Party (Namibia) and a South African section which renamed itself WIRFI and took 5,481 votes in the 1994 South African general election, as well as Michel Varga's Group of Opposition and Continuity of the Fourth International. Trotskyism is the political ideology and branch of Marxism developed by Ukrainian-Russian revolutionary Leon Trotsky and some other members of the Left Opposition and Fourth International.
