Wooloowin is a suburb in the City of Brisbane, Queensland, Australia. In the , Wooloowin had a population of 3,938 people. Geography Wooloowin is an inner-north suburb of Brisbane, Australia located approximately 5–6 km north of the city's central business district. History The origin of the suburb's name has been attributed to either the local Indigenous Australian term for a pigeon or the term for a species of fish. It was the home of Brisbane's first Resident Judge, Alfred Lutwyche, who lived in Kedron Lodge. Holy Cross Primary School opened in 1889. A stump-capping ceremony for Wooloowin Methodist Church was held on Saturday 30 November 1901. The site was on Old Sandgate Road at the junction with Bayview Terrace (now 170 Bonney Avenue). While the church was being built, it was destroyed by a cyclone in January 1901. Wooloowin State School is a heritage-listed public co–educational primary school at 663 Lutwyche Road, Wooloowin, City of Brisbane, Queensland, Australia. It was built from 1914 to 1934. It was added to the Queensland Heritage Register on 13 January 1995. History Wooloowin State School was built in four stages. The first section was constructed in 1914, with additions in 1918, 1925 and 1934. In 1914, it was considered a model school at the forefront of progressive education in Queensland, and this was reflected in the building, grounds, furniture, equipment, facilities, curriculum, and staff. It was a model school for a modern, rapidly expanding suburb. Kalinga is a suburb in the City of Brisbane, Queensland, Australia. In the , Kalinga had a population of 2,126 people. Geography Kalinga is bounded by Kedron Brook to the north. The Kedron Brook bikeway follows the brook on the suburb's north-east boundary with two bridges over the creek to Shaw Park in Wavell Heights () and to Toombul Terrace in Nundah (). Holy Cross Laundry is a heritage-listed benevolent institution at 60 Bridge Street, Wooloowin, City of Brisbane, Queensland, Australia. It was designed by Francis Drummond Greville Stanley and built from 1888 to 1905. It was also known as Magdalen Asylum. It was added to the Queensland Heritage Register on 21 October 1992. History The Holy Cross Laundry was constructed as an auxiliary wing to the Holy Cross Retreat at Wooloowin in 1888-89. The retreat was built for the Sisters of Mercy as a tribute to the work of James Quinn, Roman Catholic Bishop of Brisbane from 1859 until his death in 1881. Clayfield is a suburb in the City of Brisbane, Queensland, Australia. In the , Clayfield had a population of 10,555 people. Geography Clayfield is by road from the Brisbane GPO. Lutwyche is a northern suburb in the City of Brisbane, Queensland, Australia. In the , Lutwyche had a population of 3,454 people. Lutwyche is north of the city's central business district. Albion Fire Station is a heritage-listed former fire station at 42 Bridge Street, Wooloowin, City of Brisbane, Queensland, Australia. It was designed by Department of Public Works and built from 1925 to 1927. It was added to the Queensland Heritage Register on 28 February 2003. History The former Albion Fire Station is a substantial two-storey red brick building standing prominently on Bridge Street (now in Wooloowin but formerly in Albion). It was officially opened on Monday 17 January 1927 when the Home Secretary James Stopford pulled a rope which automatically swung the doors open, rang the alarm and roused the firemen to action, and the two fire engines raced out of the station. Kalinga Park
Kalinga Park is a heritage-listed park at 100 Bertha Street, Kalinga (formerly part of Wooloowin), City of Brisbane, Queensland, Australia. The eastern section of the park is in neighbouring Clayfield. It is also known as Anzac Memorial Park. It was added to the Queensland Heritage Register on 3 July 2007. History Previously known as Anzac Memorial Park, Kalinga Park was officially opened in 1910 and is located on the southwest bank of Kedron Brook at Kalinga. Kalinga Park occupies a portion of the early German Mission Station established at Zion Hill in 1838, forming the first free European settlement in Queensland. The missionaries named Kedron Brook, but the mission closed in 1850 and the area was surveyed in 1851 prior to other settlers moving into the area. Alfred Lutwyche
Justice Alfred James Peter Lutwyche, Queen's Counsel (26 February 1810 – 12 June 1880) was the first judge of the Supreme Court Bench of Queensland. Early life Lutwyche was the eldest son of John Lutwyche, of a Worcestershire family, who removed to London and started as a leather merchant, under the firm of Lutwyche & George, in Skinner Street, Snow Hill. Lutwyche was educated at Charterhouse School and at the Queen's College, Oxford, where he matriculated in 1828 and graduated B.A. in 1832, and subsequently M.A. While still at university, he had decided to pursue a career in law and became a student at the Middle Temple in London. After working in the legal areas of conveyancing and special pleadings, Lutwyche was called to the bar in May 1840. As a barrister, he went on the Oxford circuit. Kedron Lodge is a heritage-listed villa at 123 Nelson Street, Kalinga (formerly in Wooloowin), City of Brisbane, Queensland, Australia. It was designed by architect Christopher Porter and was built from 1860 to the early 1900s by John Petrie. It was added to the Queensland Heritage Register on 21 October 1992. History Kedron Lodge was one of the first Brisbane dwellings designed by architect Christopher Porter.
