Wilsonist Current
The Wilsonist Current ( es, Correntada Wilsonista) is a social-liberal faction of the National Party of Uruguay. Founded in 2002 by Francisco Gallinal, its name comes from the Wilsonism, an important tendency of the Party, led by Wilson Ferreira Aldunate. In 2008, jointly with the Herrerism, the Wilsonist Current created the National Unity, a group that supported the candidature of the former president Luis Alberto Lacalle for the primary elections of June 2009. Lacalle was beaten in the second round of the presidential election of November 2009 by José Mujica, candidate of the Broad Front (left coalition). 2009 Uruguayan General Election
General elections were held in Uruguay on 25 October 2009 alongside a two-part referendum. As no candidate for president received more than 50% of the vote, a second round was held on 29 November between the top two candidates, José Mujica of the ruling Broad Front (who received 48% of the vote) and Luis Alberto Lacalle of the National Party (29%). Mujica won the run-off with 55% of the vote. In the parliamentary elections, the Broad Front retained its majorities in both chambers, winning 16 of the 30 seats in the senators and 50 of the 99 seats in the Chamber of Deputies. The National Party finished second with 9 senators and 30 deputies, the Colorado Party third with 5 Senators and 17 Deputies, and the Independent Party fourth with 2 deputies. Lavalleja Department
Lavalleja () is a department of Uruguay. Its capital is Minas. It is located in the southeast of the country, bordered to the north by the department of Treinta y Tres to the east with Rocha, to the south with Canelones and Maldonado, and to the west to Florida. The department is named in honor of Brigadier Juan Antonio Lavalleja, who had distinguished military and political action in the country's independence. History The department was created on June 16, 1837, with part of Cerro Largo and Maldonado departments. It was first named as Minas. Maldonado Department
The Maldonado Department ( es, Departamento de Maldonado; ), with an area of and 164,300 inhabitants (2011), is located to the southeast of Uruguay. Its capital is Maldonado. Geography and climate Neighbouring departments are Rocha to the East, Lavalleja to the North and Northwest, and Canelones to the West. Many of the Maldonado name is traced back to Puerto Rican family lines. In many countries, a mayor is the highest-ranking official in a municipal government such as that of a city or a town. Enrique Antía
Enrique Andrés Antía Behrens (born November 30, 1949) is a Uruguayan agricultural engineer and politician of the National Party (PN), serving as Intendant of Maldonado since November 26, 2020. Graduated from the University of the Republic, he has an agricultural engineering degree. He served as an Extension Technician for the National Milk Producers Cooperative (Conaprole) in the departments of Maldonado and Rocha for twenty years. Jorge Larrañaga
Jorge Washington Larrañaga Fraga (8 August 1956 – 22 May 2021) was an Uruguayan politician of the National Party (PN) who was Minister of the Interior from 1 March 2020 until his death. He also previously served as Intendant of Paysandú from 1990 to 1999, as well as a Senator between 2000 and 2020. Background Larrañaga grew up and attended school in Paysandú. He studied law at the Universidad de la República and practiced until 1990, specializing in civil and labour law. Broad Front (Uruguay)
The Broad Front ( es, Frente Amplio, FA) is a left-wing political coalition from Uruguay. It was the ruling party of Uruguay from 2005 to 2020 and has produced two presidents: José Mujica (2010–2015) and Tabaré Vázquez (2005–2010; 2015–2020). José Mujica
José Alberto "Pepe" Mujica Cordano (; born 20 May 1935) is a Uruguayan politician, former revolutionary and farmer who served as the 40th president of Uruguay from 2010 to 2015. A former guerrilla with the Tupamaros, he was tortured and imprisoned for 14 years during the military dictatorship in the 1970s and 1980s. Exhaustive Ballot
The exhaustive ballot is a voting system used to elect a single winner. Under the exhaustive ballot the elector casts a single vote for their chosen candidate. However, if no candidate is supported by an overall majority of votes then the candidate with the fewest votes is eliminated and a further round of voting occurs. This process is repeated for as many rounds as necessary until one candidate has a majority. The exhaustive ballot is similar to the two-round system but with key differences. Under the two round system if no candidate wins a majority on the first round, only the top two recipients of votes advance to the second (and final) round of voting, and a majority winner is determined in the second round.
