Willows High School
Willows High School ( cy, Ysgol Uwchradd Willows) is a secondary school located in the Tremorfa area of Cardiff, Wales. It caters for pupils aged 11 to 16 and is English-medium. As of September 2015, the headteacher is Chris Norman. He succeeded Joy Ballard, under whom the proportion of pupils attaining five A*-C grades rose from 14% to 50%. In recent years, Willows has been oversubscribed for pupils. History The school site is extensive and dates from the late 1960s, and was built on the site of the World War II airfield RAF Pengam Moors. The school is named after the air balloon pioneer Ernest Willows who had his airfield on the site. Many of the buildings have since been modernised. There are plans to continue this modernisation in the future, including with a PFI agreement as part of plans by Cardiff Council. Tremorfa
Tremorfa (Welsh for ''Tre'' town + ''morfa'' coastal marsh) is a district and (since 2016) community of the city of Cardiff, Wales. It falls into the Splott ward of Cardiff. Transport Tremorfa is served by the Cardiff Bus 11 route (was 61 for a few years as the Pentrebane route was extended) operating from Pengam Green to the city centre via Tremorfa, Splott and Adamsdown. It is also served by the numbers 1 and 2 City Circle service. Ernest Willows
Ernest Thompson Willows (1886–1926) was a pioneer Welsh aviator and airship builder. He became the first person in the United Kingdom to hold a pilots certificate for an airship when the Royal Aero Club awarded him ''Airship Pilots Certificate No. 1''. Willows was born in Cardiff, Wales on 11 July 1886. He was educated at Clifton College in Bristol, entering the school in 1896 and leaving in 1901 aged 15 to train as a dentist. He built his first airship, the Willows No. 1, in 1905 when he was 19. It was first flown from East Moors, Cardiff on 5 August 1905, the flight lasting 85 minutes. This was soon followed by an improved ''Willows No. 2'', in which he landed outside Cardiff City Hall on 4 June 1910. Jessica Leigh Jones
Jessica Leigh Jones (born 22 July 1994) is a Welsh engineer and astrophysicist from Cardiff. She is credited with becoming the first female to win the UK Young Engineer of the Year Award in 2012 for her work designing a portable uterine contraction monitor which cut manufacturing costs by 99%. She was later rewarded for her efforts to commercialise the technology, receiving the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) Intel Inspiration Award for Entrepreneurship in the same year. Early life and education Jones was born in Cardiff on 22 July 1994. As a young child, her father worked at MOD St Athan, Vale of Glamorgan, as an aircraft electrician. Estyn
Estyn is the education and training inspectorate for Wales. Its name comes from the Welsh language verb ''estyn'' meaning "to reach (out), stretch or extend". Tonyrefail School
Tonyrefail School was an 11-18 mixed comprehensive school of approximately 1050 students that served the town of Tonyrefail and the surrounding areas. The school was situated on the north side of the town of Tonyrefail, on the B4278 near Bryngolau, around three miles south of Tonypandy and about four miles west of Pontypridd. It took its pupils from a cluster of six primary schools, Abercerdin, Cwmlai, Hendreforgan, Tonyrefail, Tref-y-Rhyg, and Williamstown, and worked with other schools in Rhondda Cynon Taf to offer a range of post-16 courses at its Sixth Form Centre. RAF Pengam Moors
Royal Air Force Pengam Moors (or more simply RAF Pengam Moors, or also known as RAF Cardiff) is a former Royal Air Force station and maintenance unit (MU), located on the Pengam Moors area of Tremorfa, 2 miles south east of Cardiff city centre in Wales from June 1938 to January 1946. Prior to RAF service the site served as a private aerodrome later called Cardiff Municipal Airport. After the Second World War the airfield reverted to private commercial flying until closure in 1954 when all services were transferred to the larger Rhoose Airport. Joy Ballard
Joy Ballard (born 1966) is a British head teacher. She has been prominently featured in the media discussing the potential for improvement in schools and issues with the British education system. Ballard grew up in Southampton on a council estate, and became notable as the former head teacher of Willows High School in Cardiff. She starred in the television documentary series ''Educating Cardiff'' for her role in making Willows High School one of the most improved schools in Wales during her three-year term as head teacher. In August 2015, she became the head teacher of Ryde Academy on the Isle of Wight.
