Williams Pinball Controller
The Williams Pinball Controller (WPC) is an arcade system board platform used for several pinball games designed by Williams and Midway (under the '' Bally'' name) between 1990 and early 1999. It is the successor to their earlier System 11 hardware ('' High Speed'', '' Pin*Bot'', '' Black Knight 2000''). It was succeeded by Williams/Midway's Pinball 2000 platform, before Williams left the pinball business in October 1999. ''FunHouse'' (designed by Pat Lawlor) was the first production game to use WPC, although there are prototype Dr. Dude machines that use WPC. An arcade video game takes player input from its controls, processes it through electrical or computerized components, and displays output to an electronic monitor or similar display. Most arcade video games are coin-operated, housed in an arcade cabinet, and located in amusement arcades alongside other kinds of arcade games. Continuously Variable Slope Delta Modulation
Continuously variable slope delta modulation (CVSD or CVSDM) is a voice coding method. It is a delta modulation with variable step size (i.e., special case of adaptive delta modulation), first proposed by Greefkes and Riemens in 1970. CVSD encodes at 1 bit per sample, so that audio sampled at 16 kHz is encoded at 16 kbit/s. The encoder maintains a reference sample and a step size. Each input sample is compared to the reference sample. If the input sample is larger, the encoder emits a ''1'' bit and adds the step size to the reference sample. If the input sample is smaller, the encoder emits a ''0'' bit and subtracts the step size from the reference sample. The encoder also keeps the previous ''N'' bits of output (''N'' = 3 or ''N'' = 4 are very common) to determine adjustments to the step size; if the previous ''N'' bits are all 1s or 0s, the step size is increased. ''White Water'' is a 1993 pinball game designed by Dennis Nordman and released by Williams. The theme is based on white water rafting, which is reflected in the game's 'wild' ramps and very fast game-play. ''Fish Tales'' is a fishing-themed pinball game released by Williams in 1992. It is one of the top 20 most produced pinball machines of all time, selling more than 13,000 units. Overview The general goal is to catch as many fish and tell the most outlandish stories about their size possible. The machine's backglass is topped with a plastic fish that thrashes its tail when the player achieves certain goals, and the players launches balls with an autoplunger shaped like a fishing rod. ''Fish Tales'' introduced flippers with lightning bolts on them that were believed to be shorter than other Williams flippers of the time. Doctor Who (pinball)
''Doctor Who'' is a pinball machine designed by Bill Pfutzenreuter (Pfutz) and Barry Oursler, and released by Midway (under the ''Bally'' brand name) in September 1992. It is based on the television series '' Doctor Who''. As stated in the Gameplay section, the rulesheet is rather different from other pinball machines released at the time, which didn't help popularity (and even now it is still seen as an exotic machine amongst collectors) as casual players did not understand the complex rule changes that occur during the game. The first 100 games included a moving Dalek topper that would turn side-to-side while the robot was speaking. The effect was achieved by fitting the robot's body with a complex motor, cam, and optoelectronics system. Its complexity and expense led to it being cut from the production run. ''Black Rose'' is a pinball machine designed by John Trudeau and Brian Eddy and produced by Midway (released under the '' Bally'' name). The game features a pirate theme and was advertised with the slogan ''"This game is loaded!".'' ''Bally'' abandoned the idea to use black pinballs for the machine. Gameplay The basic goal of the game is to sink ships. The game features a rotating cannon situated underneath the playfield used to aim the ball at targets to award letters in the word "SINK SHIP". During multiball you also get letters for shooting flashing ramps. Once SINK SHIP is spelled, you load the cannon to light the center shot (the "Broadside") to get big points. It is the best-selling solid state pinball machine of all time with 20,270 units sold. ''Hurricane'' is a pinball machine released by Williams Electronics in August 1991. It was designed by Barry Oursler as the third game in Oursler's amusement park themed pinball trilogy. The first being Comet, released in 1985, and the second being Cyclone, released in 1988. Description The game has some new features and many other features that came from its predecessors. New features include the Hurricane ramp which is a ramp that circles the whole playfield and acts as the skill shot when the player shoots the ball up the ramp on the right side of the playfield awarding the player 500,000 and adds up and additional 250,000 each time the skill shot is made successfully.
