William F. Winter
William Forrest Winter (February 21, 1923 – December 18, 2020) was an American attorney and politician who served as Governor of Mississippi from 1980 to 1984. A member of the Democratic Party, he also served as Lieutenant Governor, State Treasurer, State Tax Collector, and in the Mississippi House of Representatives. Born the son of a legislator and school teacher in Grenada, Mississippi, Winter was educated at the University of Mississippi. He enlisted in the United States Army after graduation and assumed responsibility for training troops before being posted to the Philippines. Upon his return to the United States, Winter enrolled in law school and became increasingly involved in politics, winning election to the Mississippi House of Representatives in 1947. Re-elected twice, he supported bills aimed at governmental reform. The University of Mississippi (byname Ole Miss) is a public research university that is located adjacent to Oxford, Mississippi, and has a medical center in Jackson. State Treasurer of Mississippi is a post created in 1817 when the state was admitted to the Union. Before the state was formed by splitting the Alabama Territory from the Mississippi Territory, an equivalent post was the Territorial Treasurer General, established in 1802. The elected office of the State Treasurer was created under Article 5, Section 134, of the Mississippi Constitution. The Treasurer's responsibilities include the issuance of State debt, responsibility for the timely payment of principal and interest on the State's bond and note obligations, and receiving, disbursing and investing State funds. William Aylmer Winter
William Aylmer Winter (March 22, 1872 - March 12, 1952) was a farmer and a Democratic Mississippi state legislator from Grenada County in the early-to-mid 20th century. He was also the father of the Mississippi governor William Forrest Winter. Early life William Aylmer Winter was born on March 22, 1872, in Grenada County, Mississippi. He was the son of William Brown Winter and Amelia (Fisher) Winter. He went to the private and public schools of Grenada and Tallahatchie counties. He graduated from the Iuka Normal Institute with an A. B. in 1891. He was a farmer.
