White River (Nevada)
The White River is a small and discontinuous river located in southeastern Nevada notable for several endemic species of fish. The river was named for F. A. White, a 19th-century explorer. Course The White River begins at the Great Basin Divide in the White Pine Range near Ely, where it is fed by snowmelt and springs from Currant Mountain. It passes by the towns of Preston and Lund, flowing south through the White River Valley more or less continuously for about . Along the way it receives water from various springs on the slopes of the Grant Range to the west and the Egan Range to the east. State Route 318 (SR 318) is a state highway in eastern Nevada. It is often used as a shortcut for long-distance traffic along U.S. Route 93, bypassing the longer and less direct route U.S. Route 93 follows between Ely and Crystal Springs. The Pahranagat National Wildlife Refuge is a protected wildlife refuge, at the southern end of the Pahranagat Valley and administered by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. It is north of Las Vegas, Nevada, in Lincoln County, Nevada. The refuge was created on August 16, 1963, and is part of the larger Desert National Wildlife Refuge Complex, which also includes the Ash Meadows National Wildlife Refuge, the Desert National Wildlife Refuge, and the Moapa Valley National Wildlife Refuge. Alamo is an unincorporated town in Lincoln County, Nevada, United States, about north of Las Vegas along U.S. Route 93. Its elevation is . As of the 2010 census it had a population of 1,080. History A post office has been in operation at Alamo since 1905. The community was named in commemoration of the Battle of the Alamo. A large share of the first settlers were Mormons. Alamo banned alcohol sales due to the religious roots and principles of the settlers. Many of the residents are members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and their faith "preaches abstinence from alcohol". Crystal Springs is a ghost town in the Pahranagat Valley region of Lincoln County, Nevada in the United States. The ghost town is located at the junction of State Route 318 and State Route 375 (Extraterrestrial Highway), just northwest of U.S. Route 93.
