Nevada State Route 318
State Route 318 (SR 318) is a state highway in eastern Nevada. It is often used as a shortcut for long-distance traffic along U.S. Route 93, bypassing the longer and less direct route U.S. Route 93 follows between Ely and Crystal Springs. The highway was established in the 1930s as State Route 38 and State Route 38A, and was renumbered to SR 318 in 1976. At a total of , it is the longest state route in Nevada. The road is used for open speed highway races twice a year. Route description SR 318 begins on U.S. Route 93 (US 93) at Crystal Springs in Lincoln County. From there, it travels north through Hiko. SR 318 generally parallels the route of the White River on its trek northward. The highway travels through Nye County and the town of Sunnyside. Hiko, Nevada
Hiko is a small, agrarian community in the Tonopah Basin on State Route 318 in Lincoln County, Nevada, United States. It is a census-designated place, with a population of 119 at the 2010 census. Demographics Description The first permanent settlement at Hiko was made in 1853. Hiko was the county seat of Lincoln County from 1867 to 1871 and a few hundred residents lived nearby, due largely to silver mines in the area. Today, the area is a farming and ranching area, and not much remains of the old town except the cemetery, some mill ruins and a red rock building that was a general store. Although populated, Hiko appears on at least two ghost town lists. Most of the residents of Hiko own farms or ranches, and little to no industrial activity takes place there. In 1871 Hiko was replaced as the county seat of Lincoln County with the current seat, Pioche. The Hiko and Crystal Springs provide a large supply of water for the Hiko farms and ranches. The Brown Fire was a wildfire that burned in Lund, Nevada in the United States. First reported on June 24, 2020, the Brown Fire burned and was contained on June 30, 2020. The fire skirted along Highway 318 and threatened the south side of Lund, resulting in the mandatory evacuation of residents in the southern part of the community. The cause of the fire remains under investigation. Events The Brown Fire was first reported on June 24, 2020 around 3:00 pm EST, burning on the south and east side of the community of Lund, Nevada. The fire was initially estimated to be around and growing, fueled by grass, brush and timber, and moving closer to Lund and skirting along Highway 318. Lund is a small town and census-designated place in White Pine County, Nevada, United States. The population of Lund as of 2020 was 211. Etymology Lund was named for Anthon H. Lund, a Mormon church official. History Lund was settled in 1898 on land that the United States government had given the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (Mormons) in lieu of land that had been confiscated under the Edmunds–Tucker Act. The first settlers were members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and the Church still has a ward in Lund.
