Whatever (Oasis Song)
"Whatever" is a song by the English rock band Oasis. Written by the band's lead guitarist, Noel Gallagher, it was released on 18 December 1994 as the band's first non-album single. A subsequent lawsuit awarded a co-writing credit to Neil Innes. History At six minutes and twenty-one seconds, "Whatever" was the longest single the band had released up to that point (it was later surpassed by "Champagne Supernova"). The song follows an AB structure, which differs from Verse-Chorus, as the main hook occurs at the beginning of the song. The song suddenly changes key during the bridge, before returning to the main chord progression of the song, which repeats for a two-and-a-half-minute outro in which, one by one, each instrument cuts out until only the strings are playing. Finally, the song ends with an extended, recorded applause track. Oasis (band)
Oasis were an English rock band formed in Manchester in 1991. Originally known as the Rain, the group initially consisted of Liam Gallagher (lead vocals, tambourine), Paul Arthurs (guitar), Paul McGuigan (bass guitar) and Tony McCarroll (drums). Liam's older brother Noel (lead guitar, vocals) later joined as a fifth member, finalising the group's core lineup. During the course of their existence, they had various lineup changes, with the Gallagher brothers remaining the only staple members. ''How Sweet to Be an Idiot'' is the first solo album by Neil Innes, formerly of the Bonzo Dog Doo-Dah Band, and was released in 1973. Release The title track was released as a single (with B-side "The Age of Desperation") but failed to chart. It was a more instrumented version than on the album, arranged by Richard Hewson. Its melody was borrowed by Oasis for their single " Whatever", released in 1994; Innes claimed plagiarism and as a result received royalties and a co-writing credit. The album was re-released by United Artists in 1980 under the title ''Neil Innes A-Go-Go'' and by EMI in 1994 with additional tracks – most of which had been released on singles – under the title ''Re-Cycled Vinyl Blues''. Early life Wilfred Gibson was born on 28 February 1942 in Dilston, Northumberland.
