Wetaskiwin Regional Division No. 11
Wetaskiwin Regional Division No. 11 or Wetaskiwin Regional Public Schools (WRPS) is the school board serving the County of Wetaskiwin No. 10. WRPS is a public school board system obliged to accept anyone who meets age and location requirements. Size WRPS operates 20 public schools in Wetaskiwin, Millet, Gwynne, Pigeon Lake Buck Lake, Alder Flats and Winfield. Also included in the school division is the Wetaskiwin Home Education system and two Colony Schools Pine Haven Colony School and Silver Creek Colony School. Governance WRPS is operated by a group of seven elected trustees and one appointed trustee they then elect a chairman, and a vice-chairman. Each of the trustees overlooks a different electoral district, whether it be the city of Wetaskiwin, Millet, or other rural attendance areas. Wetaskiwin
Wetaskiwin ( ) is a city in the province of Alberta, Canada. The city is located south of the provincial capital of Edmonton. The city name comes from the Cree word ''wītaskiwinihk'', meaning "the hills where peace was made". Wetaskiwin is home to the Reynolds-Alberta Museum, a museum dedicated to celebrating "the spirit of the machine" as well as the Wetaskiwin and District Heritage Museum, which documents the pioneer arrival and lifestyle in Wetaskiwin's early years. Millet, Alberta
Millet is a town in central Alberta, Canada. It is approximately south of Alberta's capital city of Edmonton. History The Town of Millet was named in honour of August Millet, who was believed to be a canoeist for Father Lacombe. (Another possible source of the name is that it is named after French painter Jean-François Millet, a favourite of railway tycoon William Cornelius Van Horne, who also named nearby Hobbema after Dutch painter Meindert Hobbema.) On June 17, 1903, Millet was proclaimed a village by an Order-in-Council of the Northwest Territories. By 1908, Millet's first councillors were elected. In October 1927, a disastrous fire destroyed many of the buildings along the east side of Railway Street. In 1950, the Board of Trade built a community hall and gave it to the Village. Gwynne, Alberta
Gwynne is a hamlet in central Alberta, Canada within the County of Wetaskiwin No. 10. It is located on Highway 13, approximately east of Wetaskiwin. History In 1902, pioneer homesteader Charles Rodberg (known in his native Belgium as Chevalier Charles Rodberg de Walden) opened a store and post office along the railway and the area was known as Rodberg's Crossing, or Rodberg's Flat. Later the area was known as Diana, after his eldest child, and the Post Office was called the Diana Post Office. When the CPR arrived in 1905 the community was renamed to honor the wife of a railway official. Julia Maude Schreiber (née Gwynne) was the second wife of Sir Collingwood Schreiber (1831-1908), a railway builder, former chief engineer of the CPR and former federal deputy minister of railways and canals. Pigeon Lake is a lake in central Alberta, Canada that straddles the boundary between Leduc County and the County of Wetaskiwin No. 10. It is located close to Edmonton, Leduc and Wetaskiwin. Falun is a hamlet in central Alberta, Canada within the County of Wetaskiwin No. 10. It is located on Highway 13, approximately west of Wetaskiwin. The community was named by John Strom after Falun, in Sweden, the native land of a large share of the early citizens. The first school opened in 1906 and the first post office opened in 1904.
