Western Australian Government Railways H Class (diesel)
The H class are a class of diesel locomotives built by English Electric, Rocklea for the Western Australian Government Railways in 1964–1965. History To assist with the conversion of the Eastern Goldfields Railway from Perth to Kalgoorlie to standard gauge, five locomotives were purchased from built English Electric. After being shipped by sea from Rocklea, they were hauled on narrow gauge to Upper Swan with the first entering service in January 1965. After the completion of the gauge conversion project they began to haul local freight and infrastructure trains. In October 1992, H4 was scrapped with the other used as shunters at Forrestfield until withdrawn in 1996. Kewdale, Western Australia
Kewdale is a suburb of Perth, Western Australia within the City of Belmont. Kew Street was one of the first roads in this district, hence the naming of the suburb. Geography Kewdale is bounded by Cloverdale and Perth Airport to the north, Belmont to the east and Welshpool and Carlisle to the south. The suburb is a mixture of residential to the west with commercial and industrial areas to the east. A switcher, shunter, yard pilot, switch engine, yard goat, or shifter is a small railroad locomotive used for manoeuvring railroad cars inside a rail yard in a process known as ''switching'' (US) or ''shunting'' (UK). Switchers are not intended for moving trains over long distances but rather for assembling trains in order for another locomotive to take over. Gauge Conversion
Gauge conversion is the changing of one railway track gauge (the distance between the running rails) to another. Sleepers If tracks are converted to a narrower gauge, the existing sleepers (ties) may be used. However, replacement is required if the conversion is to a wider gauge.
