West Lyon Community School District
West Lyon Community School District is a rural public school district headquartered in Inwood, Iowa. The district is mostly within Lyon County, with a small area in Sioux County, and serves the towns of Inwood, Alvord, Larchwood, and Lester, and the surrounding rural areas. The district was formed in 1960, and for a few years, the district operated two separate schools: West Lyon North, serving Larchwood and Lester, and West Lyon South, serving Inwood and Alvord. Eventually, this was reduced to just a single school, serving the four towns of Alvord, Inwood, Larchwood, and Lester. Shawn Kreman has served as superintendent since 2018, after serving as principal at Iowa Valley. The Iowa High School Athletic Association (IHSAA) is the regulating body for male Iowa high school interscholastic athletics and is a full member of the National Federation of State High School Associations. Its female counterpart, the Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union, (IGHSAU) is an associate member. Iowa is the only state that maintains separate governing bodies for boys' and girls' athletics. Lyon County, Iowa
Lyon County is the most northwesterly county of the U.S. state of Iowa. As of the 2020 census, the population was 11,934. The county seat is Rock Rapids. Lyon County is named in honor of Brigadier General Nathaniel Lyon, who served in the Mexican–American War and the Civil War. He was killed at the Battle of Wilson's Creek, Missouri, on August 10, 1861, after which the county was named for him. The county's name was originally Buncombe County, but was changed by the state legislature on September 11, 1862. Larchwood is a city in Lyon County, Iowa, United States. The population was 926 at the time of the 2020 census. History Larchwood was founded ''circa'' 1872 by a group of McLean County, Illinois land developers: Jesse W. Fell (10 November 1808 – 25 February 1887) and Charles W. Holder (25 September 1819 – 10 April 1900). Fell was born in Pennsylvania, had settled in Bloomington, Illinois, in 1831 and had played an active role in founding many Illinois towns, including Clinton, Normal, Pontiac, and Towanda. He was a close friend of Abraham Lincoln, and with his brother Kersey Fell had persuaded Lincoln to write his famous autography. He was nationally known for his love of trees.
