West Cornwall (UK Region)
West Cornwall is a name used to refer to the westernmost part of Cornwall in the United Kingdom. It is also used by Cornwall Council and Cornwall Housing as part of their resource allocation and area management plans, in which Cornwall is divided into three sections, west, central and east. The South West Coast Path also uses West Cornwall to describe its westernmost parts. West Cornwall covers the area of the Penwith and Kerrier districts, stopping at Carrick which is central Cornwall. Some maps show West Cornwall as covering a smaller area, ending at a line between Hayle and Helston, making West Cornwall the distinct landform at the very South-Western tip of Cornwall. News outlets often use West Cornwall without any obvious correlation to either way of defining the area, but simply to refer to anywhere west of Truro. Cornwall Council ( kw, Konsel Kernow) is the unitary authority for Cornwall in the United Kingdom, not including the Isles of Scilly, which has its own unitary council. The council, and its predecessor Cornwall County Council, has a tradition of large groups of independent councillors, having been controlled by independents in the 1970s and 1980s. South West Coast Path
The South West Coast Path is England's longest waymarked long-distance footpath and a National Trail. It stretches for , running from Minehead in Somerset, along the coasts of Devon and Cornwall, to Poole Harbour in Dorset. Because it rises and falls with every river mouth, it is also one of the more challenging trails. The total height climbed has been calculated to be 114,931 ft (35,031 m), almost four times the height of Mount Everest. It has been voted 'Britain's Best Walking route' twice in a row by readers of The Ramblers' ''Walk'' magazine, and regularly features in lists of the world's best walks. Penwith
Penwith (; kw, Pennwydh) is an area of Cornwall, England, United Kingdom, located on the peninsula of the same name. It is also the name of a former Non-metropolitan district, local government district, whose council was based in Penzance. The area is named after one of the ancient administrative hundreds of Cornwall which derives from two Cornish language, Cornish words, ''penn'' meaning 'headland' and ''wydh'' meaning 'at the end'. Natural England have designated the peninsula as national character area 156 and named it West Penwith. It is also known as the Land's End Peninsula. Kerrier
Kerrier ( kw, Keryer) was a local government district in Cornwall, England, United Kingdom. It was the most southerly district in the United Kingdom, other than the Isles of Scilly. Its council was based in Camborne (). Other towns in the district included Redruth and Helston. The district also contained the Lizard Peninsula. ''Kerrier'' is named after one of the ancient administrative Hundreds of Cornwall, Kerrier, which covered broadly the same area, but did not have a coast on the north. The district was formed on 1 April 1974, as a merger of the borough of Helston, the urban district of Camborne-Redruth and Kerrier Rural District. Carrick ( kw, Karrek) was a local government district in Cornwall, England, United Kingdom. Its council was based in Truro. The main centres of population, industry and commerce were the city of Truro and the towns of Falmouth/ Penryn. The district was created under the Local Government Act 1972, on 1 April 1974 by the merger of the municipal boroughs of Truro, Falmouth and Penryn, and the Truro Rural District. It was named after the Carrick Roads, an inlet near Falmouth that the rivers Percuil, Penryn and Fal drain into. Hayle
Hayle ( kw, Heyl, "estuary") is a port town and civil parish in west Cornwall, England. It is situated at the mouth of the Hayle River (which discharges into St Ives Bay) and is approximately seven miles (11 km) northeast of Penzance. Hayle parish was created in 1888 from part of the now defunct Phillack parish, with which it was later combined in 1935, and incorporated part of St Erth in 1937. Truro (; kw, Truru) is a City status in the United Kingdom, cathedral city and civil parishes in England, civil parish in Cornwall, England. West Cornwall Hospital
West Cornwall Hospital is a hospital located in Penzance, Cornwall, England. It is managed by the Royal Cornwall Hospitals NHS Trust. History The hospital has its origins in the Penzance Dispensary established in 1809. This became the West Cornwall Dispensary and Infirmary in 1873 and the West Cornwall Hospital in 1928. It joined the National Health Service in 1948. A new CT scanner and new X-ray equipment were installed at the hospital in spring 2018.
