The Gera Süd–Weischlitz railway (also known as the ''Elstertalbahn''—"Elster Valley Railway") is a main railway line in the German federal states of Thuringia and Saxony, which was originally built and operated by the Saxon-Thuringian Railway Company (''Sächsisch-Thüringische Eisenbahngesellschaft''). It runs in the valley of the White Elster (''Weiße Elster'') from Gera via Greiz and Plauen to Weischlitz. History The original starting point of the line was at Wolfsgefärth station on the existing Prussian state railways, Prussian Leipzig–Probstzella railway. The section from Wolfsgefärth to Greiz went into operation on 17 July 1875. The second section from Greiz to Plauen (Vogtland) Unterer station, Plauen lower station (''Plauen unterer Bahnhof'') was opened on 8 September and the last section was opened to Weischlitz on 20 September of the same year, where it connected with the Plauen–Cheb railway. Weischlitz Station
Weischlitz station is a local railway junction in the municipality of Weischlitz in Vogtland in the German state of Saxony. The station is located on the Plauen–Cheb railway and the railway from Gera Süd. History The Voigtland State Railway (''Voigtländische Staatseisenbahn''), which was opened in 1865 by the Royal Saxon State Railways (''Königlich Sächsische Staatseisenbahnen''), provided a rail connection to numerous villages and towns in the Vogtland railway, but it involved numerous twists on a long route. In the 1860s, it was planned to shorten the route by the construction of the Plauen–Oelsnitz link. Weischlitz received a station on the section of the line approved in 1868. The White Elster was moved a little farther west into a new river bed to allow the station to be built on the river bed. Leipzig–Hof Railway
The Leipzig–Hof railway is a two-track main line in the German states of Saxony, Thuringia and Bavaria, originally built and operated by the Saxon-Bavarian Railway Company. It runs from Leipzig through Altenburg, the Werdau wye junction, Reichenbach and Plauen to Hof. The Werdau–Hof section is part of the ''Saxon-Franconian trunk line'' (''Sachsen-Franken-Magistrale''), the line connecting Dresden and Nuremberg. Its first section opened in 1842 and it is one of the oldest railways in Germany. As a result of the division of Germany after the Second World War, the line lost considerable importance. Even after German reunification in 1989/90, the line has not been able to regain its former importance, especially as government policy gave preference to the extensive upgrade of the parallel Großheringen–Saalfeld railway. The Plauen–Cheb Line is a mainline railway in Saxony, Germany and the Czech Republic, which was originally built and operated by the Kgl. Sächsischen Staatseisenbahnen (''Royal Saxon State Railways''). It runs from Plauen im Vogtland through Weischlitz, Adorf und Bad Brambach over the national border to Cheb. History Planning and construction The origins of the present mainline between Plauen–Cheb stem from the Vogtländischen Staatseisenbahn from Herlasgrün through Falkenstein/Vogtl. and Oelsnitz to Eger, which opened in November 1865. A direct track from Plauen to Bohemia was planned, and in October 1871 work started on the tracks from Plauen to Oelsnitz. To overcome the height difference between the Saxon-Bavarian Railway and the floor of the White Elster valley a considerable amount of earth had to be moved. Gutenfürst Station
Gutenfürst station is the station of Weischlitz district of Gutenfürst in the German state of Saxony. The station on the Leipzig–Hof railway was opened as early as 1848, but it gained greater importance only after the Second World War. Gutenfürst was divided from 1945 to 1990 between the American and the Soviet occupation zones and later between West Germany and East Germany. Today only local trains stop here. Elster Viaduct (Pirk)
The Elster Viaduct near Pirk, part of Weischlitz municipality, is one of the most unusual motorway bridges in Germany. The building of this bridge began in 1937, but was stopped in 1940 due to the chaos created by World War II. Since this bridge then was in the restricted area of the East Germany, construction was not restarted until 1990. In June 1990 preliminary investigations began, and finally in September 1990 the building of the bridge began anew. In August 1993 the bridge was opened to traffic. Federal Motorway 72 (Ger.
