Waupun is a city in Dodge County, Wisconsin, Dodge and Fond du Lac County, Wisconsin, Fond du Lac counties in the U.S. state of Wisconsin. The population was 11,344 at the 2020 census. Of this, 7,795 were in Dodge County, and 3,549 were in Fond du Lac County. In Fond du Lac County, the Waupun (town), Wisconsin, Town of Waupun abuts the city of Waupun. History Founding Waupun was founded in 1839 by Seymour Wilcox, the first settler along the Rock River in what was then deciduous forested land. Edwin Hillyer
Edwin Hillyer was an American industrialist from Waupun, Wisconsin, Waupun, Wisconsin. Hillyer first came to Waupun in 1847, eight years after Seymour Wilcox, the settlement's founder. Life Edwin Hillyer was born in Ohio on September 30, 1825. Edwin, along with his brother, Joseph Talcott Hillyer, settled in Waupun in 1847. When they first arrived, both of them worked in lumber. In 1849, Edwin and eight other Waupun settlers came down with gold fever and formed a company to travel to California. They all returned in 1852. Civic Life Hillyer was heavily connected to several early Waupun industries. When he returned from California, he engaged in a store business with his brother before he sold his share a few years later. He and others established the Dodge County Mutual Insurance Company, and Hillyer worked there for the entirety of its existence. Waupun Public Library
The Waupun Carnegie Library building is in Waupun, Wisconsin and currently serves as the Waupun Heritage Museum. History A Carnegie library, the building began construction October 11, 1904 and was completed a year later on October 22, 1905. It served in its original function as the library until 1968 when a new library was completed. It was leased to the Waupun Historical Society in 1971. Waupun is a town in Fond du Lac County, Wisconsin, United States. The population was 1,385 at the 2000 census. The town abuts the city of Waupun. The unincorporated community of Ladoga is also located partially in the town. Geography According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 35.0 square miles (90.6 km), all land. Demographics At the 2000 census there were 1,385 people, 472 households, and 407 families living in the town. The population density was 39.6 people per square mile (15.3/km). Area code 920 is a telephone area code in the North American Numbering Plan (NANP) for a large area of eastern Wisconsin. It was created on July 26, 1997, in a split from area code 414, which formerly served the entire eastern third of the state. 920 is scheduled to be overlaid with area code 274 on May 5, 2023. In 2008, service providers recognized the need for a second area code for northeastern Wisconsin, leading the Public Service Commission of Wisconsin to approve an overlay plan with new area code 274. Horicon Marsh
Horicon Marsh is a marsh located in northern Dodge and southern Fond du Lac counties of Wisconsin. It is the site of both a national and a state wildlife refuge. The silted-up glacial lake is the largest freshwater cattail marsh in the United States. Geological history Horicon Marsh was created by the Green Bay lobe of the Wisconsin glaciation during the Pleistocene era. The glacier, during its advance, created many drumlins (a glacial landform) in the region, many of which have become the islands of Horicon Marsh. The marsh and surrounding Dodge County have the highest concentration of drumlins in the world. During the glacier's retreat, a moraine was created, forming a natural dam holding back the waters from the melting glacier and forming Glacial Lake Horicon.
