Waterville GAA is a Gaelic Athletic Association Gaelic football club in Waterville, south County Kerry, Ireland. Former Kerry player & manager Mick O'Dwyer is from the club. The club grounds have gone under a major renovation in the recent years with a gym, clubhouse and state of the art floodlights. Gaelic football ( ga, Peil Ghaelach; short name '), commonly known as simply Gaelic, GAA or Football is an Irish team sport. It is played between two teams of 15 players on a rectangular grass pitch. The objective of the sport is to score by kicking or punching the ball into the other team's goals (3 points) or between two upright posts above the goals and over a crossbar above the ground (1 point). Players advance the football up the field with a combination of carrying, bouncing, kicking, hand-passing, and soloing (dropping the ball and then toe-kicking the ball upward into the hands). In the game, two types of scores are possible: points and goals. A point is awarded for kicking or hand-passing the ball over the crossbar , signalled by the umpire raising a white flag. Waterville, historically known as Coirean (), is a village in County Kerry, Ireland, on the Iveragh Peninsula. The town is sited on a narrow isthmus, with Lough Currane on the east side of the town, and Ballinskelligs Bay on the west, and the Currane River connecting the two. The N70 Ring of Kerry route passes through the town. As of the 2016 CSO census, Waterville had a population of 462. Name The town's name in Irish, ''Coireán'', means "little cauldron" or "little whirlpool", and refers to the shape of Ballinskelligs Bay on which the town sits. The Kerry County Board of the Gaelic Athletic Association (GAA), or Kerry GAA, is one of the 32 county boards of the GAA in Ireland. It is responsible for Gaelic games in County Kerry, and for the Kerry county teams. The Kerry branch of the Gaelic Athletic Association was founded in the year 1888. Mick O'Dwyer
Michael O'Dwyer (born 9 June 1936) is an Irish retired Gaelic football manager and former player. He most famously managed the senior Kerry county team between 1974 and 1989, during which time he became the county's longest-serving manager and most successful in terms of major titles won. O'Dwyer is regarded as the greatest manager in the history of the game. He is one of only three men to manage five different counties (he was preceded in reaching this total by Mickey Moran in 2008 and emulated by John Maughan in 2018). Martin Breheny has described him as "the ultimate symbol of the outside manager". The Kerry Senior Football Championship (known for sponsorship reasons as Garvey’s SuperValu Senior Football Championship) is an annual Gaelic football competition organised by the Kerry County Board of the Gaelic Athletic Association since 1889 for the top Gaelic football teams in the county of Kerry in Ireland. The series of games are played during the summer and autumn months, with the county final currently being played in either Austin Stack Park or FitzGerald Stadium in October. Initially played as a knock-out competition, the championship currently uses a double elimination format whereby each team is guaranteed at least two games. The Kerry Intermediate Football Championship is an annual Gaelic football competition contested by mid-tier Kerry GAA clubs. Rathmore are the title holders (2022).. Teams 2022 Teams Honours The winners can be promoted to play in the Kerry Senior Football Championship in the year after they win this competition. The winners of the Kerry Intermediate Football Championship progress to the Munster Intermediate Club Football Championship, representing Kerry, later that year, or, as was the case in 2021, the following year. Denis O'Dwyer
Denis Dwyer is a footballer from Waterville in south County Kerry. He played Wing Forward on the Kerry team that won the All-Ireland Senior Football Championship 1997 & was a sub on the 2000 team. He has also won All Irelands at Minor in 1994 U21 in 1995 as Captain & 1996 and Vocational Schools in 1993. He also won a Munster Junior Championship in 1995. In 2004 he was a member of the South Kerry side that won the Kerry Senior Football Championship. Schools, Underage and Junior Dwyer first tasted All Ireland success as a member of the Kerry Vocational Schools team with whom he won an All Ireland with in 1993. Following on from his Vocational Schools success he was a member of the Kerry minor team in 1993 but had little success as Kerry lost out to Cork in the Munster semi final on a 2-07 to 1-09 scoreline, with Dwyer scoring a point. Karl O'Dwyer
Karl O'Dwyer is a former footballer from Waterville in South Co Kerry. He played with the Kerry team that were shocked by Clare in the final of the 1992 Munster Senior Football Championship. He later played with Kildare and had much success when his father Mick was manager. In 1998 he helped Kildare to their first Leinster Senior Football Championship title since 1956, he later helped his team to a first All Ireland final since 1928 but lost out to Galway on the day. In the semi-final Kildare beat O' Dwyers native Kerry. At the end of the year, he picked up an All Stars Award at Full Forward. In 2000 he once again helped Kildare to a Leinster title. O'Dwyer retired from inter-county in 2002 following Kildare's defeat to Kerry in the All-Ireland Qualifiers. Before moving to Kildare he played with his local club Watervile and with the South Kerry team. He won 2 South Kerry championship medals.
