Waratah Mayfield Cheetahs
Waratah Mayfield is a rugby league club based in the Newcastle, New South Wales region of Australia. Known as ''The Cheetahs'' and wearing Maroon and Gold, they were a member of the First Grade Newcastle Rugby League until 2004 and now compete in Newcastle & Hunter Rugby League. History Waratah Mayfield RLFC were founded in 1927 and entered the Newcastle Rugby League in 1928. Waratah were successful right from the start in the Newcastle First Grade in only their second year losing the grand final in the years 1929, 1933 and 1934, before finally tasting glory in 1936 when they beat Northern Suburbs in the grand final, the team they lost to in 1929. In 1990, Waratah-Mayfield ended a 38-year drought when they defeated Lakes United 17-14 to win the Newcastle premiership. The next premiership came in 2000 when Waratah Mayfield faced off against Lakes United and again claimed victory taking out the grand final 20-14. Dean Phipps is a New Zealand sailor who has competed in eight America's Cups. Phipps was a part of the Victory ’83 challenge for the 1983 Louis Vuitton Cup and sailed on '' Australia IV'' during the 1987 Defender Selection Series. He was the backup bowman for New Zealand Challenge in the 1992 Louis Vuitton Cup. He sailed on '' Steinlager 2'' during the 1989–90 Whitbread Round the World Race and also competed in the 1993-94 edition, on board '' Winston''. He sailed with Team New Zealand on '' NZL 32'' during the 1995 America's Cup victory and 2000 America's Cup defence. Ron Bailey (rugby League)
Ron Bailey (1914–1989) was an Australian rugby league footballer who played in the 1930s, and 1940s. He was a New South Wales Country, New South Wales and Australian representative whose club career was played with Waratah Mayfield, Newtown, Canterbury-Bankstown in Sydney and overseas with Huddersfield. He captained his country in one Test in 1946 and was the first Canterbury-Bankstown player to do so. Club career Bailey was graded with the Waratah Mayfield club at age 18. After that, he went on to represent the Country New South Wales rugby league team in 1935-36. In 1936 he came to the attention of Sydney talent scouts when he represented for Newcastle against a touring English side, downing the visitors 21-6. Lakes United is a rugby league club based in the Newcastle, New South Wales region of Australia. Known as ''The Seagulls'' and wearing Royal blue and Gold, they have been a member of the Newcastle Rugby League since 1947. History Lakes United were successful in their first year in the Newcastle competition winning the competition in 1947. It had players selected to represent Newcastle and the Country Rugby League.
