Wamego is a city in Pottawatomie County, Kansas, United States. As of the 2020 census, the population of the city was 4,841. History Wamego was platted in 1866. It was named for a Potawatomi Native American chief. The first post office in Wamego was established in October 1866. Geography Wamego is located at (39.204074, -96.308328). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of , of which is land and is water. Wamego is located at the intersection of U.S. Route 24 and K-99. It is approximately east of Manhattan; and about west-northwest of Topeka. The Kansas River flows along the southern edge of the city. Climate The climate in this area is characterized by hot, humid summers and generally mild to cool winters. Zeandale is an unincorporated community in Riley County, Kansas, United States. As of the 2020 census, the population of the community and nearby areas was 62. It is located about east of Manhattan at the intersection of Tabor Valley Rd and K-18 highway (aka Zeandale Rd). History Zeandale was named by J.H. Pillsbury who settled the township in 1855. The name is said to have been taken from the Greek, ''zea'' meaning "corn" and the English, ''dale''. Zeandale had a post office between 1857 and 1944. It is also home to Zeandale Community Church, established in 1896. The church was originally associated with the Stone-Campbell Restoration movement (Christian Church), but was re-established in the 1950s as a non-denominational community church. The Kansas State High School Activities Association (KSHSAA) is the organization which oversees interscholastic competition in the U.S. state of Kansas at the high school, high-school level. It oversees both athletic and non-athletic competition, and sponsors championships in several sports and activities. History The Kansas State High School Activities Association was formed in 1937 and incorporated in 1956. As early as 1910, Kansas schools organized the statewide Debate League and Athletic Association governed by high school principals. Wabaunsee is an unincorporated community in Wabaunsee County, Kansas, United States. As of the 2020 United States census, 2020 census, the population of the community and nearby areas was 104. It was named for former Potawatomi, Pottawatomi chief Waubonsie, Wabaunsee. History Wabaunsee was founded in 1855 by a group of nearly 100 emigrants from New Haven, Connecticut. They were inspired by a sermon given by well-known Abolitionism in the United States, abolitionist Henry Ward Beecher, who gave money to help supply rifles for the men to defend themselves. The rifles were smuggled through pro-slavery areas in crates marked "Beecher's Bibles."
