Walter Baker Sports Centre is located in Barrhaven a suburb in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada in the former City of Nepean at 100 Malvern Drive. Barrhaven is a suburb of Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. It is located about southwest of the city's downtown core. Prior to amalgamation with Ottawa in 2001, Barrhaven was part of the City of Nepean. Nepean, Ontario
Nepean ( ) is a former municipality and now geographic area of Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. Located west of Ottawa's inner core, it was an independent city until amalgamated with the Regional Municipality of Ottawa–Carleton in 2001 to become the new city of Ottawa. Ben Franklin (Canadian Politician)
Ben Franklin (1942–March 22, 2003) was mayor of the city of Nepean, Ontario from the 1978 municipal election to 1997. Nepean became part of the city of Ottawa in 2001. He was born in Elgin, Ontario in 1942. He graduated from Carleton University with a BA in 1971 and became a high school geography teacher. In 1973, he was elected to Nepean council. In 1975, he ran unsuccessfully as the Liberal candidate in the riding of Carleton in the Ontario general election. As mayor, Franklin established a "pay as you go" policy which brought the city out of debt. He retired in 1997 due to health problems. His executive assistant, Mary Pitt, succeeded him as mayor of Nepean after running a campaign that promised to simply continue Franklin's vision. He received an artificial heart in March 2003 but died of heart failure later that month at the age of 60. Walter David Baker, (August 22, 1930 – November 13, 1983) was a Canadian parliamentarian and lawyer. Baker is best known for having been Government House Leader during the short-lived minority government of Joe Clark. He received much of the popular blame for the defeat of the government in a Motion of no confidence on December 13, 1979 with the claim that the government fell because "Walter Baker couldn't count". However, observers pointed out that targeting Baker as the scapegoat was unfair as he was House Leader, not Party Whip. The defeat was the result of the Clark government's decision to alienate the six Social Credit Members of Parliament by refusing to accord them official party status as well as Clark's view that he could "govern as if" he had a majority government.
