Wallop is an American software company that was spun off from Microsoft in 2006 to provide a social networking service, and from 2008 made Adobe Flash-based applications for other social networks. History Wallop was originally designed around 2003 as an Internet social networking service from Microsoft Research. As a startup, the company behind Wallop was backed by $13 million from Microsoft and venture capitalists including Norwest Venture Partners, Bay Partners and Consor Capital. The company was later spun off of Microsoft. While the Wallop team was working on launching their website, however, the expansion of other social networks and their opening up of APIs led to Wallop's changing directions. John Wallop
Sir John Wallop, KG (c. 1490 – 13 July 1551) was an English soldier and diplomat who belonged to an old Hampshire family from the village of Farleigh Wallop. Biography Wallop, was son of Stephen Wallop by the daughter of Hugh Ashley. Wallop may have taken part in Sir Edward Poynings's expedition to the Low Countries in 1511 and may have been knighted there. He certainly was knighted before 1513, when he accompanied Sir Edward Howard on his unfortunate but glorious journey to Brest. In July 1513 he was captain of the ''Sancho de Gara'', a hired ship, and in May 1514 he was captain of the ''Gret Barbara''. In these years he did a great deal of damage to French shipping. On 12 August 1515, he was sent with letters for Margaret, Duchess of Savoy, regent of the Netherlands. In 1516 he left England on a more honourable errand. Robert Wallop
Robert Wallop (20 July 1601 – 19 November 1667) was an English politician who sat in the House of Commons at various times from 1621 to 1660. He supported the Parliamentary cause in the English Civil War and was one of the regicides of King Charles I of England. Early life Wallop was the only son of Sir Henry Wallop of Farleigh Wallop, Hampshire, and his wife, Elizabeth Corbet, daughter of Robert Corbet of Moreton Corbet, Shropshire. Career Wallop held demesne lands in both Hampshire and Shropshire, including a manor called "Fitch" which has not been identified by historians, but was potentially located in Shropshire. In 1621, Wallop was elected Member of Parliament for Andover and re-elected in 1624. In 1625, he was elected MP for Hampshire and re-elected in 1626. He was elected MP for Andover again in 1628 and sat until 1629, when King Charles decided to rule without parliament for eleven years. Newton Wallop, 6th Earl of Portsmouth JP, DL (19 January 1856 – 4 December 1917), styled Viscount Lymington until 1891, was a British Liberal politician but then joined the Liberal Unionist Party in 1886. He later switched back to the Liberal Party to serve as Under-Secretary of State for War under Sir Henry Campbell-Bannerman from 1905 to 1908. John Charles Wallop, 3rd Earl of Portsmouth (18 December 1767 – 14 July 1853), styled Viscount Lymington until 1797, was a British nobleman and lunatic. The Earl was known from an early age to have an unsound mind, and his estate was placed under the control of four trustees. While Portsmouth had periods in which he appeared sane, he often engaged in a variety of bizarre and sadistic behavior. He whipped his servants, beat and bled his horses, and slaughtered cattle, shouting, with an axe. The Earl showed a remarkable mania for funerals, which he referred to as "black jobs". He attended them frequently, insisted on tolling the bells at Hurstbourne for funerals there, and sometimes flogged the ringers with the bellrope afterwards. John Wallop, 2nd Earl of Portsmouth (29 June 1742 – 16 May 1797), styled Hon. John Wallop from 1743 to 1749 and Viscount Lymington from 1749 to 1762, was a British nobleman. He was the son of John Wallop, Viscount Lymington and his wife Catherine. Through his father he inherited the Wallop electoral interests at Andover, near the family seat of Hurstbourne Park, and through his mother, those of the Conduitt family at Whitchurch, although his influence there had ceased by 1774. His father died at the age of 31 in 1749; Wallop, now styled "Viscount Lymington," did not inherit the earldom from his grandfather until 1762. On 1 October 1755, he was created a DCL of Oxford. Sir Henry Wallop (c. 1540 – 14 April 1599) was an English statesman. Biography Henry Wallop was the eldest son of Sir Oliver Wallop (d. 1566) of Farleigh Wallop in Hampshire. Having inherited the estates of his father and of his uncle, Sir John Wallop, he was knighted in 1569 and was chosen member of parliament for Southampton in 1572. His connection with Ireland, began in 1579, when he was appointed vice-treasurer of that country. This position was a very thankless and difficult one and Wallop appears to have undertaken it very unwillingly. However, Sir Henry reached Dublin and was soon immersed in the troubles caused by the rebellion of Gerald FitzGerald, 15th Earl of Desmond, finding, in his own words, it was "easier to talk at home of Irish wars than to be in them".
