Wakefield, Pennsylvania
Wakefield is an unincorporated community and census-designated place (CDP) within Fulton Township, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, United States. As of the 2010 census the population was 609. It is the largest community within the " Peach Bottom" ZIP code, with the area post office on Pennsylvania Route 272 just north of town. Geography Wakefield is in southern Lancaster County, in the north-central part of Fulton Township. The Wakefield CDP includes Wakefield proper as well as the community of Penn Hill to the north, at the northern junction of PA 272 and U.S. Route 222. Both highways lead north to Lancaster, the county seat. PA 272's route is more direct, leading north-northwest through Buck to Lancaster, while US 222 curves north-northeast through Quarryville and rejoins PA 272 at Willow Street for a route to the city. Pennsylvania Route 272
Pennsylvania Route 272 (PA 272) is a highway in southeastern Pennsylvania, in the Lancaster area. The southern terminus of the route is at the Mason–Dixon line southeast of Nottingham, where the road continues into Maryland as Maryland Route 272 (MD 272). The northern terminus is at an interchange with U.S. Route 222 (US 222) and PA 568 near Adamstown, where PA 568 continues east. The route heads from the Maryland border northwest through the western corner of Chester County, intersecting US 1 in Nottingham. PA 272 continues west into Lancaster County and intersects US 222 in Wakefield, where it turns north and passes through Buck before widening into a divided highway as it comes to another junction with US 222 in Willow Street. Conowingo Creek
Conowingo Creek is a U.S. Geological Survey. The name of the creek comes from the Lenape, meaning "at the rapids". It originates near the northern border of East Drumore Township and flows south, meeting Jackson Run near the southern border. It enters Fulton Township just above the birthplace of Robert Fulton, for whom the township is named. Flowing along the east side of Wakefield, it meets Little Conowingo Creek below the town, and begins to flow through hillier terrain before entering Maryland. Nottingham is an unincorporated community and census-designated place located in West Nottingham Township in Chester County, Pennsylvania. The community is located at the intersection of U.S. 1 and Pennsylvania Route 272 near the border with East Nottingham Township, a short distance north of the Maryland border. As of 2020, the CDP has a population 1,260. It is home to the 651 acre Nottingham County Park, a serpentine barrens listed as a National Natural Landmark. Conowingo Dam
The Conowingo Dam (also Conowingo Hydroelectric Plant, Conowingo Hydroelectric Station) is a large hydroelectric dam in the lower Susquehanna River near the town of Conowingo, Maryland. The medium-height, masonry gravity dam is one of the largest non-federal hydroelectric dams in the U.S., and the largest dam in the state of Maryland. The dam sits about from the river mouth at the Chesapeake Bay, south of the Pennsylvania border and northeast of Baltimore, on the border between Cecil and Harford counties. The dam supports a 9,000-acre reservoir, which today covers the original town of Conowingo. During dam construction, the town was moved to its present location about northeast of the dam's eastern end. Willow Street, Pennsylvania
Willow Street is an unincorporated community and census-designated place (CDP) in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 7,578 at the 2010 census. In the early part of the 20th century the main thoroughfare in town was lined with willow trees on both sides for the length of the town, hence the community's name. As time marched on and the town grew, the road was widened and sidewalks were installed which required the trees be removed. Only a few of the original trees remain to this day. It is the location of the Hans Herr House, the oldest homestead in Lancaster County, and also the Martin Meylin Gunshop, where the long rifle was first made.
