WKBS-TV (Philadelphia)
WKBS-TV, Ultra high frequency, UHF analog television, analog channel 48, was an Independent station (North America), independent television station licensed to Burlington, New Jersey, Burlington, New Jersey, United States, which served the Philadelphia, Pennsylvania media market, television market. The station broadcast from 1965 to 1983. History On July 8, 1964, the Federal Communications Commission granted a construction permit to Kaiser Broadcasting for a new television station to operate on channel 41 in Burlington; an overhaul of UHF allocations nationwide in May 1965 resulted in the substitution of channel 48. The station first signed on the air on September 1, 1965. It was the second independent station in the Philadelphia market, having signed on almost six months after WIBF-TV (channel 29, later WTAF-TV and now WTXF-TV) and two weeks before WPHL-TV (channel 17) relaunched. Frank Rizzo
Francis Lazarro Rizzo (October 23, 1920 – July 16, 1991) was an American police officer and politician. He served as Philadelphia police commissioner from 1968 to 1971 and mayor of Philadelphia from 1972 to 1980. He was a member of the Democratic Party throughout the entirety of his career in public office. He switched to the Republican Party in 1986 and campaigned as a Republican for the final five years of his life. Like most of his contemporaries, Rizzo was opposed to the construction of public housing in established neighborhoods, most of which at the time housed majority-white populations. Rizzo was barred from running for a third term in office by the Philadelphia City Charter. He attempted to vote in a charter change to allow him to attempt a run for reelection but was soundly defeated after urging supporters to "Vote white", which he later admitted was "a poor choice of words". Lou Gordon (May 17, 1917 – May 24, 1977) was a television commentator and talk show host, newspaper columnist, radio host, and influential political reporter, based in Detroit, Michigan. Gordon was known as a flamboyant, irreverent, and controversial interviewer. He hosted ''The Lou Gordon Program'', a twice-weekly, 90-minute television show, that was seen Saturday and Sunday nights on WKBD-TV. Produced from 1966 to 1977, ''The Lou Gordon Program'' was also syndicated across most of the larger media markets in the United States to the Kaiser Broadcasting group of stations, as well as several non-Kaiser stations. Three 90-minute television shows were taped per week - two for telecast only on WKBD, the other for nationwide broadcast. WKBF-TV
WKBF-TV was a television station that broadcast on channel 61 in Cleveland, Cleveland, Ohio, United States, from January 1968 to April 1975. Owned and operated by Kaiser Broadcasting as one of an eventual group of six stations, it was the first ultra high frequency (UHF) independent station (North America), independent station to serve northeast Ohio and the last outlet constructed by the Kaiser chain during the 1960s to begin operations. Despite airing several high-profile local programs, Kaiser's efforts to establish itself in Cleveland never took root because of the establishment of a second independent outlet, WUAB, later that same year, as well as general stagnation in the Cleveland market. Hy Lit
Hyman Aaron "Hy" Lit (May 20, 1934 – November 17, 2007) was an American disc jockey based in the Philadelphia area from the 1950s until 2005. In his 50-year career, Hy Lit broadcast from WIBG, WDAS/WDAS-FM, WKBS-TV, WIFI, WSNI/ WPGR, KPOL, WKXW, among many others. His last station was 98.1 WOGL, where he broadcast from 1989 until his resignation late in 2005. He was known as "the Jet Jockey on Flight 99" which was the frequency for WIBG. The Broadcast Pioneers of Philadelphiinducted Lit into their Hall of Fame in 2003. 1960s & 1970s Lit dominated AM radio in Philadelphia from the late 1950s through the 1960s as one of WIBG's "Good Guys," as his ''Hall of Fame'' show drew a 71 market share, unheard of before or since. He released several successful LP "Hall of Fame" collections of music he played on the show, the last of these when he joined WPGR in 1981.
