WFMK
WFMK (99.1 FM) is an adult contemporary radio station licensed to East Lansing, Michigan and serving the Lansing radio market. The station is owned by Townsquare Media and broadcasts in HD radio. WFMK is one of the United States' oldest adult contemporary stations, having programmed the format for almost four decades. The station signed on in 1959 as WSWM, and offered a MOR format. WSWM was purchased by Robert G. Liggett Jr. owner of Liggett Communications in 1971. Liggett changed the station's call sign to WFMK, and initially programmed a mix of Adult Contemporary music as "Stereo Island, WFMK 99" during the day (using the ''Stereo Island'' approach pioneered at WKNR-FM in Detroit), and Album Oriented Rock overnight. Radio First (Liggett Communications, L.L.C.) is a privately held radio broadcasting company in Michigan owned by Victoria L. Liggett. Liggett Communications is headquartered in Port Huron where it owns five radio stations licensed to St. Clair and Sanilac Counties. These five stations operate under the brand name of ''Radio First'' where they serve listeners in the Thumb area of Michigan and Southwestern Ontario. History Liggett Broadcasting (1970-2000) The predecessor to the current company was called Liggett Broadcasting and was founded by Robert Liggett Jr. in 1971. His first station was WFMK in the Lansing, Michigan market. He then added more stations in Lansing, as well as the Grand Rapids, Flint, and Saginaw/Bay City Markets. WMMQ
WMMQ (94.9 FM) is an American classic rock radio station licensed to East Lansing, Michigan. The station is owned by Townsquare Media. History What is now the current incarnation of WMMQ began broadcasting in 1963 as WVIC-FM, the sister station to WVIC (730 AM, now sports formatted WVFN). The station aired an MOR format. In the early 1970s, WVIC switched to Top 40 and "owned" the college crowd, and became one of the top-rated stations in Lansing. The manager and part owner was Bob Sherman, who also did sports. Morning man and music director Bruce Buchanan (Charlie Tuna on air), who was fired for leaving a radio station softball team game at 11 p.m. to get some sleep for the following morning's show, went on to debut WHNN in Bay City in August of 1973. Buchanan later became ops manager of KVIL Dallas. Another alumnus was Kevin McCarthy, who went to Dallas and was inducted into the Texas Hall of Fame. WHZZ
WHZZ (101.7 FM, "Mike FM") is a radio station licensed to Lansing, Michigan with a variety hits format. History The station has gone through many different formats over the years. After beginning as a simulcast of WILS 1320 AM as WILS-FM in 1967, the station separated programming in the late 1960s with an automated MOR format (with the exception of the Jerry Marshall morning show, which was simulcast with WILS-AM from 6 to 10 a.m.). In 1972, WILS-FM launched an automated Country format which was branded as "Hit Country", although the morning simulcast continued. In 1975, WILS-FM abandoned the Country format in favor of a 12-hour daily simulcast with WILS-AM, followed by split programming in the evening, which included an AOR format from 6 p.m. to midnight, and a Jazz format from midnight to 6 a.m.. WNIC (100.3 FM) is a commercial radio station licensed to Dearborn, Michigan and serving the Metro Detroit media market. Owned by iHeartMedia, WNIC broadcasts an adult contemporary radio format. Each year, usually on the first Friday of November, WNIC switches its format to all-Christmas music. WNIC's studios and offices are located in Farmington Hills. WNIC's transmitter is located near Schoolcraft Avenue and Turner Street in the City of Detroit on the Near West Side. WITL-FM
WITL-FM (100.7 MHz) is a radio station broadcasting a country music format. Licensed to Lansing, Michigan, and serving Ingham, Eaton and Clinton Counties in Michigan. It first began broadcasting in 1961 (as WMRT-FM) alongside daytime only station WMRT(AM). The stations were purchased by Mid-West Family for $187,000 in 1964 and took the WITL and WITL-FM call sign in 1966, and adopted a full-time country music format in 1967. Originally, WITL-FM was simulcast with (now defunct) WITL (AM) at 1010 kHz. The AM station went silent in 1997. It is currently owned and operated by Townsquare Media. WJIM (1240 kHz) is a commercial AM radio station licensed to Lansing, Michigan. It is owned by Townsquare Media and broadcasts a talk radio format. It is also the flagship station of the Michigan Talk Network. Studios and offices are on Pinetree Road in Lansing. WJIM is a Class C station, powered at 890 watts non-directional. Programming is simulcast on FM translator W295BP at 106.9 MHz.
