WHZZ (101.7 FM, "Mike FM") is a radio station licensed to Lansing, Michigan with a variety hits format. History The station has gone through many different formats over the years. After beginning as a simulcast of WILS 1320 AM as WILS-FM in 1967, the station separated programming in the late 1960s with an automated MOR format (with the exception of the Jerry Marshall morning show, which was simulcast with WILS-AM from 6 to 10 a.m.). In 1972, WILS-FM launched an automated Country format which was branded as "Hit Country", although the morning simulcast continued. In 1975, WILS-FM abandoned the Country format in favor of a 12-hour daily simulcast with WILS-AM, followed by split programming in the evening, which included an AOR format from 6 p.m. to midnight, and a Jazz format from midnight to 6 a.m.. WILS
WILS (1320 AM) is a commercial news/talk radio station in Lansing, Michigan. WILS is owned by MacDonald Broadcasting and features a local news department and a mixture of local and national talk personalities. WILS is powered at 25,000 watts by day. But to protect other stations on AM 1320, it reduces power to 1,900 watts at night. It uses a directional antenna day and night. The transmitter is located off North Green Road in Dimondale. WMJO
WMJO (97.3 FM, "Joe FM") is a radio station licensed to Essexville, Michigan and broadcasting at 97.3 MHz with an effective radiated power of 3,000 watts. Known on the air as ''Joe-FM'', WMJO has a variety hits format targeted to Saginaw, Bay City, and Midland. The station is one of four locally owned MacDonald Broadcasting radio stations. It first began broadcasting in 1991 under the WIXC call sign (now used by a sports radio station in Titusville, Florida). The station switched from country when it was purchased by MacDonald in 1998. WXLA (1180 kHz) is a commercial AM radio station licensed to Dimondale, a suburb of Lansing, Michigan. It is owned by MacDonald Broadcasting and airs a soft adult contemporary radio format. It uses the branding "Easy 93.3". The dial position refers to WXLA's FM translator, W227DO at 93.3 MHz in Lansing. The station is a daytimer but the FM translator broadcasts around the clock. WXLA is powered at 10,000 watts during daylight hours. For two hours after sunrise and two hours before sunset it cuts back to 2,000 watts. WMMQ
WMMQ (94.9 FM) is an American classic rock radio station licensed to East Lansing, Michigan. The station is owned by Townsquare Media. History What is now the current incarnation of WMMQ began broadcasting in 1963 as WVIC-FM, the sister station to WVIC (730 AM, now sports formatted WVFN). The station aired an MOR format. In the early 1970s, WVIC switched to Top 40 and "owned" the college crowd, and became one of the top-rated stations in Lansing. The manager and part owner was Bob Sherman, who also did sports. Morning man and music director Bruce Buchanan (Charlie Tuna on air), who was fired for leaving a radio station softball team game at 11 p.m. to get some sleep for the following morning's show, went on to debut WHNN in Bay City in August of 1973. Buchanan later became ops manager of KVIL Dallas. Another alumnus was Kevin McCarthy, who went to Dallas and was inducted into the Texas Hall of Fame. WJIM-FM (97.5 FM, "975 Now FM") is a radio station in Lansing, Michigan, broadcasting an adult leaning Top 40 (CHR) format. The station has had the WJIM-FM calls continuously since it signed on in 1960. For over three decades, WJIM-FM broadcast an easy listening/beautiful music format, which evolved during the early 1990s into a soft adult contemporary sound. On Labor Day in 1995, WJIM-FM switched from AC to "Oldies 97.5." The change came days after WIBM dropped its longtime oldies format in favor of country to compete with WITL-FM. WQHH (96.5 FM), branded "Power 96.5" is a commercial FM radio station located in DeWitt, a suburb of Lansing, Michigan. The station broadcasts with 6,000 watts. The station plays hip hop as well as rhythm & blues (R&B) music. WQHH began broadcasting on May 26, 1991 with 3,000 watts. Power was increased to the present 6,000 watts in July, 2003. WFMK (99.1 FM) is an adult contemporary radio station licensed to East Lansing, Michigan and serving the Lansing radio market. The station is owned by Townsquare Media and broadcasts in HD radio. WFMK is one of the United States' oldest adult contemporary stations, having programmed the format for almost four decades. The station signed on in 1959 as WSWM, and offered a MOR format. WSWM was purchased by Robert G. Liggett Jr. owner of Liggett Communications in 1971. Hank FM is the on-air brand name of several radio stations in the United States and Canada. Stations using the Hank FM brand name typically air a country format, in configurations of classic country, contemporary country, or a less tightly-formatted mix of the two. They generally use the slogan (He) Plays Everything Country on their mixed country radio stations, (He) Plays Country Legends on their classic country radio stations or (He) Plays New Country on their contemporary country radio stations. The format was conceived and is owned by Howard Kroeger, creator of the Bob FM format. Kroeger also provides the voice for HANK.
