Wynne Prize
The Wynne Prize is an Australian landscape painting or figure sculpture art prize. As one of Australia's longest-running art prizes, it was established in 1897 from the bequest of Richard Wynne. Now held concurrently with the Sir John Sulman Prize and the Archibald Prize at the Art Gallery of New South Wales in Sydney. It is awarded annually for "the best landscape painting of Australian scenery in oils or watercolours or for the best example of figure sculpture by Australian artists completed during the 12 months preceding the losingdate". Wynne, Arkansas
Wynne is the county seat and largest city of Cross County, Arkansas, United States. The population was 8,367 at the 2010 United States Census, 2010 Census. Nestled between the Arkansas Delta and Crowley's Ridge, Wynne is the closest city to the second-largest state park in Arkansas, Village Creek State Park (Arkansas), Village Creek State Park. Early history Wynne was named for Captain Jesse Watkins Wynne, a Texas, Texan who achieved the rank of captain in the American Civil War, Civil War at the age of just 21. He was famed for leading a group of his captors up to the Confederate States Army, Confederate lines, where he then marched them to headquarters as his own prisoners. In 1867, Captain Wynne moved to St. Francis County, Arkansas, and joined the finance company of Dennis & Beck. At that time, the Dennis & Beck company held savings for other companies and for individuals, but eventually, it became the Bank of Eastern Arkansas, and Wynne became its first president. Wynne High School
Wynne Senior High School, known as Wynne High School, is a public secondary school for students in grades nine through twelve located in Wynne, Arkansas, United States. It is one of two public high schools in Cross County and the sole high school administered by the Wynne School District. It was destroyed by a tornado on March 31, 2023. In addition to Wynne it also serves Parkin, since the former Parkin School District merged into the Wynne district on September 7, 2005. Academics Wynne High School is accredited by the Arkansas Department of Education (ADE) and has been accredited by AdvancED since 1927. The assumed course of study follows the Common Core curriculum developed by the ADE. Students complete regular (core and career focus) courses and exams and may select Advanced Placement (AP) coursework and exams that provide an opportunity for college credit. Wynee
Wynee, also spelled Winee or Winée was the first Native Hawaiian from the Hawaiian Islands to travel abroad on a Western ship. She traveled to British Columbia and China before dying on the voyage home to Hawaii. Biography Wynee was originally from the island of Hawaii, known as ''Owyhee'' by European explorers at the time. In 1787, she became the first Native Hawaiian to sail abroad with a Western ship when she was hired as the servant or maid of Frances Hornsby Trevor Barkley, the wife of Captain Charles William Barkley, on the British ship ''Imperial Eagle''. Barkley recorded her name as ''Wynee'' which was possibly an attempted spelling of '' wahine'', the Hawaiian word for woman. She traveled to the Pacific Northwest and later to China. The Barkleys intended to take her back to Europe but Wynee requested to return home and so she was left in the Portuguese colony of Macao.
